1 CA FF BURNED AT APARTMENT FIRE

Saturday, November 7, 2015   Fire raged through two Anaheim townhome fourplexes before dawn Friday, forcing residents to grab their children and pets and run for their lives.Firefighters converged on the two blazing buildings and poured in streams of water but by the time the fire was out the damage appeared complete and more than 40 people had lost their homes.

More than four hours later, as the losses started sinking in, Jessica Diaz sat with her four kids and Chihuahua on a blanket spread on a patch of grass across the street from the still-smoldering Benmore Lane buildings. She wore a bathrobe and socks and was on her cellphone trying to make arrangements. Her kids cuddled the dog, Molly.

Diaz said her neighbor pounded on the door shortly before 6 a.m. to warn her of the fire, and she opened the door and saw smoke and flames in the alley that runs through the townhouses, which all open to the outdoors.

"I ran back upstairs and grabbed the kids by their legs and literally... [ more ]

APPARATUS CRASH IN NJ

Friday, November 6, 2015     The back end of a borough fire truck struck a Ford Explorer on Tuesday afternoon as firefighters responded to a fire call, police said. The ladder truck and Ford Explorer suffered minor damage, said police spokesman Lt. Vincent Tamburro. No one was hurt.

The truck was turning from Prospect Avenue onto New Milford Avenue just before 4 p.m. Firefighters were on their way to back up New Milford  firefighters who were at a River Edge fire, Tamburro said.

The Ford Explorer was stopped at a traffic signal and pulled over to give the fire truck more room, but the back of the fire truck swung out and hit the vehicle’s back bumper as it turned, the lieutenant said.

No summonses were issued, Tamburro said. Police declined to release the drivers’ names.

There were five firefighters in the truck and three people in the Ford Explorer.

CBS4 Investigation Prompts Warnings To Firefighters About Skylights

Friday, November 6, 2015   Days after a CBS4 investigation revealed at least two incidents of Denver firefighters falling through fiberglass skylights, the Denver Fire Department has now begun surveying similar buildings and placing warnings in the department’s computer dispatch system alerting firefighters to the potential hazard.A series of CBS4 reports last week revealed a Denver firefighter fell through a fiberglass skylight on a metal warehouse in 2012. Lt. Joseph Duran was not seriously injured, but the CBS4 investigation revealed department members were subsequently not warned about what happened to Duran and the danger presented by those skylights.

It appears no department-wide warning or safety bulletin ever went out following Duran’s mishap.

Fire Chief Eric Tade said the department was trying to determine why information about that incident was not disseminated. In written reports obtained by CBS4, the incident was characterized as a “close call.”

Then, three... [ more ]

EMT STRUCK IN KY

Friday, November 6, 2015    An EMS worker was hit by a car while responding to a call. The ambulance was responding to a call at the jail when they hit the side mirrors of a pick up truck on Main Street in Nicholasville.

Officials say they pulled onto East Maple St. and one of the first responders got out of the vehicle to inspect the damage. Police say that for some reason, the EMS worker stepped into the road where was hit by a car on East Maple.

The EMS worker's partner started medical treatment as soon as he was struck.

The EMS worker has been transported to UK hospital with life threatening injuries.

Officials say the driver of the car that hit the first responder is a teenager.

"She's was a 17 year old girl high school student from East Jessamine and she's having a tough time with it as you would expect any teenager would. Her parents have picked her up and taken her to be checked out at the hospital," said Officer Kevin Grimes ... [ more ]

FIRE CREWS HOSE SLASHED WHILE OPERATING IN THE UK

Friday, November 6, 2015   A YOB deliberately slashed a hose that firefighters were using to tackle a tyre blaze on Bonfire Night.

The incident happened at around 9pm when a crew from Atherton were in the process of putting out the the fire on Melrose Avenue, Leigh.

It is so disappointing that whilst thousands of people were enjoying bonfire night as a family night a mindless minority were behaving with such shocking disregard for our staff
Coun David Acton
The incident meant crews were delayed for about 15 minutes while they replaced the hose, in which time the fire, which was close to houses and giving off black smoke, continued to burn.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said thousands of people had heeded safety warnings and enjoyed a happy bonfire night – whilst a mindless minority attacked firefighters and set fires across the county.

The service, which tweeted every incident live from its Twitter account, said more than 300 calls were received... [ more ]

CHIEF PULLS FIREFIGHTERS OUT JUST PRIOR TO COLLAPSE

Thursday, November 5, 2015    About five minutes after firefighters were ordered out of a burning home on Syracuse's (NY) South Side, the roof collapsed.

The decision to remove the two firefighters from 248 Kenmore Avenue was made by Deputy Chief Steve Cavuto and District Chief Steve Evans, though Evans said Cavuto made the final call.

Firefighters were called to the Kenmore Avenue residence around 3:30 a.m. Thursday after a neighbor called 911 to report seeing smoke. Before the firefighters left their stations, the call was upgraded to a structure fire, Evans said.

When they arrived, firefighters saw fire on the second and third floors. Crews went inside and put out the fire on the second floor, while others searched the first and second floor for any occupants.

No one was inside, Evans said.

Firefighters unsuccessfully tried to access the third floor. Evans believed the stairs to the third floor were burnt.

At that point, Cavut... [ more ]

FIRES AND POOR PEOPLE

Thursday, November 5, 2015    So... I was looking at a website about a fire conference in South Africa and noted a unique product being shown by a vendor-and what struck me is the very real issue of fires in their slums and shanty town. Communities filled with thousands of people-living literally in shacks...and that's a nice description for some of their living conditions.

I looked up their site and found a really interesting solution to help detect FIRES in these poorest of the poor communities. We already KNOW that children, elderly and the poor are most often the victims of fires. Show us a poor community and we'll show you fires. Socio-economic stuff.

I found the website of a "start up" group called Lumkani. Lumkami has developed an early-warning system to reduce the damage and destruction caused by the spread of shack/slum fires in those urban informal settlements.

THESE ARE NOT SMOKE DETECTORS

Many co... [ more ]

Fleeing Bad Guy Tries To Hit Firefighter, Hits Fire Truck

Thursday, November 5, 2015    A Mansfield man was arrested Wednesday after police alleged he tried to run over a firefighter and caused two crashes while fleeing from authorities. The driver, Kalvin Gross, 21, was believed to be under the influence of drugs during the pursuit, Mansfield police Sgt. Mike Napier said.

Mansfield Fire Department was responding to a report of an unresponsive male in his car on West Cook Road at 3 p.m. Wednesday when the Gross awoke and tried to hit a firefighter with his car, Napier said.

Gross then drove away and passed out behind the wheel a second time at Marion Avenue and Bentley Street, police reported. Waking up again, the Gross struck a fire truck while attempting to drive away.

He then led officers on what Napier described as a lengthy pursuit, during which he struck another car at Park Avenue and Trimble Road.

Gross continued driving until he reached Park Avenue and Grasmere Avenue, where he was forced to exit t... [ more ]

FIREFIGHTER CANCER - A THREAT AFTER THE FIRE

TMJ 4 Video
Thursday, November 5, 2015    We know firefighters risk their lives to save others during fires. But something they’re not doing after the flames are out could be putting them in danger.
Uniforms are designed to keep firefighters safe when they run into a fire, but they can become dangerous if they are not cleaned properly.

Scott "Shoe" Schumacher worked the front lines for 19 years as a lieutenant with the Kenosha Fire Department.

Whenever a call came in, he was there. Matthew Haerter was Schumacher's best friend and called him "a go-to professional as well as a go-to friend."

Schumacher loved his family. He shared a similar love to his firefighting career. But in 2015 the 41-year-old lost a 10-year fight against metastatic melanoma cancer-- a skin cance... [ more ]

DEADLY CO....A CLOSE CALL FOR FDNY FIREFIGHTERS AS FDNY EMS DETECTORS SOUND THE ALARM

Thursday, November 5, 2015    FDNY Firefighters responding to a medical emergency in the Bronx Monday night nearly got caught in a carbon monoxide trap -- but a equipment on an EMS crew coming behind them averted what would have been a really bad situation. The firefighters were reportedly unaware they had walked into a building that was literally filled with CO. It wasn’t until the FDNY EMS crew from Station 15 got on the scene that an alarm was sounded.

Some 10 residents and the Firefighters evacuated from the building at E. 217th St. Four people, including the initial patient who called 911 with difficulty breathing, were taken to Jacobi Hospital for treatment of minor injuries related to the CO exposure, according to FDNY. The call that came in just before 0100 hours was for a cardiac arrest and Firefighters were the first on the scene for the emergency call, taking care of the patient, who was actually having an asthma attack.

But when FDNY EMS members from... [ more ]

UPDATE: AERIAL LADDER COLLAPSE DURING TESTING

Wednesday, November 4, 2015   A Lancaster-area man suffered serious injuries when he was pinned under the ladder of a firetruck at the Clymer Volunteer Fire Department on Monday afternoon.
Mike Keith, safety officer at the Clymer fire department, said the truck was undergoing its yearly recertification as required by the department’s insurance carrier. The rigger that supports the truck failed, causing the truck to tip onto the victim, according to reports. The man, who was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, is the only one who knows the full circumstances.
“At this point, the only person who knew what was going on was the victim,” Keith said by phone this morning. “No one else saw it.”
Indiana County 911 put a call out to Clymer firefighters to respond to their station along Sherman Street at 2:51 p.m. The Cherryhill Township fire department, Citizens’ Ambulance and a medical helicopter were also dispatched. The victim’s condition was not known at press time today.
The victim ... [ more ]
