DETROIT FF INJURED MAKING A RESCUE

Monday, November 23, 2015   Flames were ripping out of the top windows of a two-story home on Detroit’s west side when firefighters arrived at 7 a.m. Saturday.“I have a victim in the rear stairwell,” a firefighter radioed to the chief.

An 88-year-old woman was trapped on the burning stairwell of her house at 3000 Tyler near Lawton. As Sgt. Christian Spitzig tried to reach her, the porch collapsed.

“We got a man down, a firefighter, at the rear of the dwelling,” a firefighter radioed to the chief. “He’s going to have to be transported.”

Crushed beneath the collapse, Spitzig “directed our brothers to continue with the search,” Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said.

And they did, rescuing the woman before it was too late.

“I called Chris and he told me that he knew the porch was suspect but he was more concerned about rescuing the elderly citizen trapped inside,” the commissioner said.

“Chris disregarded his safety to rescue t... [ more ]

Thankfully our members were in the house where the call was and not in or near the vehicle when it was struck. The driver of the pickup had some injuries. FDNY Rookie Injured After 10 Days on Job

Sunday, November 22, 2015    A female firefighter who was allowed to graduate the Fire Academy despite failing physical tests has already gone out on medical leave — just 10 days into the job, The Post has learned.
Probationary firefighter Choeurlyne Doirin-Holder injured herself Monday while conducting a routine check of equipment at Queens’ Engine 308 in South Richmond Hill. Getting off the truck, Doirin-Holder missed a step and landed on her left foot, suffering a fracture, sources said.

It was her second shift after a transfer from Engine 301. In training for a hazmat assignment, officers found her struggling to perform the required tasks.

Firefighters called the tripping incident embarrassing — and alarming.

“If you’re going to get hurt in the firehouse checking a rig, what would happen at a fire?” an insider asked.

On Nov. 6, Doirin-Holder celebrated her FDNY graduation as one of four new female Bravest, bringing the n... [ more ]

FIREFIGHTER LODD REPORT: Blinded by smoke, Firefighters drove off road to their deaths

Sunday, November 22, 2015   Strong, shifting winds that dramatically fanned a wildfire near Twisp in Okanogan County in August pushed walls of flames and smoke onto a team of firefighters, catching them off-guard and forcing them to retreat blindly down a winding dirt road to their deaths, according to a joint state and federal report released Friday. With “the road completely obscured by smoke,” the four U.S. Forest Service firefighters fleeing in Engine No. 642 — one of several crews battling the blaze — raced down Woods Canyon Road as flames exploded around them.

“They kept driving downhill, but they had zero visibility, and the engine went off the road,” the report said. “The engine came to a stop, and the surviving firefighter got out and was immediately engulfed in flames. He went through the flames and made his way to the road.”

The report offers the most detailed account to date about the circumstances surrounding the deadly blaze that killed U.S. Forest Service fir... [ more ]

APPARATUS STRUCK IN CO BY SPEEDING DRIVER

Sunday, November 22, 2015   After one fatal accident and one near-miss, let this week serve as a reminder to slow down and use caution around emergency vehicles.

On Saturday morning, just six days after Colorado State Patrol Trooper Jaimie Jursevics was killed by a drunk driver, a speeding driver hit a fire truck on Highway 85 at County Road 26, narrowly avoiding firefighters, who were tending to another car accident.

"One of the riskiest things we do is direct traffic or pull out on the highways," said Phil Tiffany, fire chief at Fort Lupton Fire Protection District. "[Drivers] just don't pay attention."

Tiffany said the truck's emergency lights were flashing, and that witnesses saw other drivers move to allow the speeding driver enough space to miss the truck. No one was injured.

The rest of his crew tried to reach into the hole to pull him out. Fearing the worst, a mayday call went out.

"Any time a firefighter calls a mayday like that, we call for extra help," Gonzales said. "But before that extra help went out to the dispatcher he was already located and extricated quick. "

Dep. Chief Gonzales says he was only trapped for about 30 seconds.

"Luckily there was a crew that was underneath, they got a ladder, positioned his legs on the ladder and then brought him down safely."
