endgadget Google Photos

Google Photos saves space by deleting images you've already backed up

Google Photos is a handy way to backup and organize images, and starting today, Android users are getting new features to help with the task. First, a "Free Up Space" option in the Settings menu will automatically delete photos stored on your mobile device that have already been backed up in the cloud. To make sure that you don't delete any copies that you might need on your phone or tablet, you'll have to confirm the action before it happens. You'll also be able to nix any photos stored on your device's SD card from inside the app so they won't continue to be visible there. On the web, you can opt for the smaller "High quality" setting after photos have been uploaded in "Original quality." Doing so not only saves space with smaller files, but those files won't count against the storage cap like the full resolution images do. The new features are hitting the app today on Android devices, so you should see the changes soon.

It's been doing this for months now.

Sounds like your problem is the phone you got and not the OS, You are talking about bloatware but you have one of the phones that are known for bloatware. IF you want to compare OS then get a nexus and have a pure experience.

Disagree. Sounds more like user error to me. Google Photos is of the best photo apps currently available and one of the first I download on a new phone.

I had TONS of space on my Samsung Galaxy S5 until Google Photos updated itself. Now I am CONSTANTLY prompted to delete photos of the device because I am "nearly out of space". I can no longer install new programs. And when scrolling back through thumbnails of photos from 6 months ago, Google Photos is accessing the INTERNET to show thumbnails of photos ON THE DEVICE. What the frack?

Also Google Photos is now incapable of deleting photos because they are stored on the SD card (but yet my internal storage usage JUMPED when the app installed -- go figure). When I try to delete a photo from Google Photos, it says I have to go over to "Photos" and delete it there. What a kludge!

Google Photos is one of the main reasons I am about to dump Android altogether. It's a bloated pig of inefficiency and stupidity.

Well it looks like all your problems are solved now.
