An injured Atlanta firefighter was pulled from a business fire this morning. Officials say something fell on him and injured his leg. http://2wsb.tv/1PTkaaJ
NIST (The National Institute for Standards and Technology) and UL (Underwriters Laboratory) produced reports based on scientific analysis of fire in the structural firefighting environment.
Millions of dollars were spent, and voluminous reports were generated.
The highly regarded "International Society of Fire Service Instructors" (ISFSI) even published a bold position statement calling for radical change.

Just got back in quarters from 2-month old, first thing in the morning cardiac arrest.
Transported to the hospital but sadly our resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
Sometimes this job can really, really SUCK.

Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even of supreme sacrifice.
Firemen are going to get killed. When they join the department they face that fact.
When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work.
They were not thinking of getting killed when they went where death lurked. They went there to put the fire out, and got killed.
Firefighters do not regard themselves as heroes because they do what the business requires.
But, above all; our proudest endeavor is to save lives of men-the work of God Himself.
Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even at the supreme sacrifice.
Such considerations may not strike the average mind, but they are sufficient to fill to the limit our ambition in life and to make us serve the general purpose of human society.
Edward F. Croker, Chief of Department, F.D.N.Y. 1899-1911

The highly regarded "International Society of Fire Service Instructors" (ISFSI) even published a bold position statement calling for radical change.
The ISFSI position statement encourages fire departments "to adjust their tactical plans and training programs to incorporate NIST & UL research into their emergency response operations."
This was meant to be a "call to action" to springboard research-based intelligence into fire service training and operations.
The problem?
Change is slow to reach the fire drill / training ground and even slower to become department standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The U.S. Fire Service has multiple 100’s of years of tradition. It can be historically traced all the way back to a great conflagration in Boston, MA in 1631.
Have you ever heard it been said, “US Fire Service … 100’s of years of tradition, unimpeded by change.”?
Here's how I personally plan on helping implement this painful, but necessary change... Embrace it and use humor of course.
I don't know who created it, but this meme is funny and perfect!

Recently I watched this short video clip / interview and had to share it:
In the interview actor Randolph Mantooth discusses how he once considered becoming a real firefighter and paramedic for Los Angeles County, what he calls "one of the most noble professions that anybody could possibly have."
He also discusses how paramedics, on separate occasions were there in real life to save both he and his sister's lives.
It’s surreal and humbling to hear someone you look up to and idolize, my childhood hero, say that you and your coworkers are heroes to him.
Don’t miss this video / interview:

*** Note:
If you’re not aware of this Randy Mantooth has been battling cancer. As he puts it “Hearing ‘you have cancer’ and enduring the ensuing treatment was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do”… but, a few weeks ago, hearing “you’re cancer-free” was music to his ears.
He’s thankful for his determined doctors and modern medicine and also thankful for the thousands of prayers that have lifted his spirits along the way.
The road to full recovery will take many more months -- chemo really kicked his butt! – but last Thanksgiving Day he put all that aside and was simply grateful for the special people in his life, and for the gift of life itself.
Thank you Randy Mantooth for what you have done for our field and for inspiring so many people (including me) to become our TV hero John Gage.
Godspeed healing and recovery!

!['"The Empty Table"
A TOUCHING MEMORIAL to ALL of Our Fallen Firefighters
*** PLEASE SHARE this honorable post...
This Thanksgiving please take time to remember all our fallen Brothers and Sisters.
The "Empty Table" honors those Firefighters who are no longer with us.
The Firefighters who were to sit here died in the line of duty and made the "supreme sacrifice".
The table is set for 2. Two in and two out...the Firefighter's rule.
The empty chairs represent those who went in, and never came back out.
The white table cloth represents the purity of attention the fallen comrades possess.
On each plate there is salt which symbolizes the tears shed by family, friends and all who suffer the pain of losing the Firefighters.
There is a slice of lemon representing the bitterness of faith felt by those left behind.
The inverted glass is a reminder that these Firefighters are no longer with us.
The red rose denotes the ultimate sacrifice and shows that we mourn, honor and miss them.
The white rose represents those friends who still breathe.
The last item is the Firefighter's Flag "Loyal to Our Duty". It reminds us of the Firefighters who are currently with us and all those who have gone on before us.
Let this post be a reminder that we Brothers and Sisters, that we still honor and respect…
and that we NEVER FORGET !

!['4 year Anniversary of FDNY "Black Sunday" LODD
November 22, 2011
Brotherhood + Toughness = FDNY R3 Lt. Joey DiBernardo Jr. (RIP)
After the "bail out" / fall from the upper story building, Joey initially lay on the hospital gurney as he said to his mom… “I’m so sorry Mom”… just like Joey, thinking of others ahead of himself. She asked how he was feeling, and Joey said everything in his body from the waist down felt like broken glass.
Well, no wonder, in the days to come, it would take 9 or 10 plates and 60+ screws to put Joey back together again. And, after several surgeries, respiratory distress, an induced coma, a ventilator, multiple "last rites", 6 weeks in New York Hospital and another 3 months in a rehab center, you were ready to go home...first in a wheelchair and then using a cane, then dancing at your sister's wedding.
Joey spent many years of therapy, rehabilitation and adjusting to his "new normal" when suddenly, tragically, on November 22, 2011, Joey Di. died of an accidental drug overdose.
Joey D. is my real life hero!
It was a fight... but eventually Joey made it to his rightful place, on the most revered and honored place in the FDNY... "The Wall of Heroes"
I wish I was... and wish more people were built just like him.
Rest in Eternal Peace Brother… can’t wait to meet you on the “Top Floor”
Your dedication, love and ultimate sacrifice in and for the fire service will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN !!!
Joey... We still have the watch.
