November 2015 Monthly Update

A Message from Assembly Member Daniel O'Donnell

Dear Neighbor,

Happy November! I hope to highlight several opportunities in the community available this month, as well as highlight the work I have recently advanced in.

October was National Bullying Prevention month as well as LBGT History Month. In honor of these events, I spoke on the history of the Marriage Equality Law at a few events. My first two appearances were in Ireland, where alongside John O'Doherty of the Rainbow Project and my fellow Assembly Member Barbra Lifton, I spoke at Amnesty International's "Marriage Equality: How the U.S. Was Won". That morning, I was honored to appear on BBC Radio Ulster with William Crawley to speak on same-sex marriage. Finally, Albany Law School invited me to speak at their "LGBT Law Day" where I delivered the keynote address and graciously accepted their award.

In my capacity as the Chair of the Corrections Committee, I continue to visit correctional facilities throughout the state of New York. I recently visited Coxsackie Correctional Facility in Greene County, where I toured the facilities and learned about the successes and challenges faced at the prison. I contend that all prisons, even those as well-run as Coxsackie, need improvements in programming.  I would also like to announce that on Wednesday, December 2 2015 I am hosting a Corrections Public Hearing in Albany regarding overseeing and investigating the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Its purpose is to examine both the internal and external options for independent investigations to ensure the safety of staff and inmates, and guarantee the integrity of the Department.

As always, should you need assistance or information, my Community Office is open again from Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM. After exciting renovations undergone during the last two weeks of August, I am happy to announce that the changes made the office more accessible to constituents. Feel free to call my office at (212) 866-3970 or email me at odonnelld@assembly.state.ny.us

Very truly yours,

Daniel O'Donnell

NYC Park's Street Tree Planting Program

NYC Parks' street tree planting program is part of a citywide initiative to green the streets of New York City. Trees on our streets have the unique ability to beautify blocks, increase property values, cool and clean the air, reduce storm water runoff, and lower building energy costs. By shading hot surfaces, trees improve public health by reducing the formation of ozone, which can trigger respiratory problems in children and the elderly. Tree planting is a key element to make the city more sustainable as our population grows.

Since 2007, over 975,000 trees have been planted along our streets, in gardens and schools, and in parks and natural areas through the MillionTreesNYC initiative. New street trees are planted by service requests from any New Yorker seeking a tree for their home, block or neighborhood. Additionally, NYC Parks is continuing to plant trees in areas with low tree canopy and high population density to ensure all communities enjoy the environmental, economic and social benefits of our urban forest.

Fall 2015 planting locations are now available to the public by visiting Million Trees NYC.
Keep in mind this list is subject to change. You may also view maps of completed block planting areas citywide.
