Death During Search: A Look at Firefighter Deaths from 2010 – Present
Bill Carey of BackstepFirefighter.com has done an excellent job analyzing firefighter deaths during search and rescue operations since 2010 in a 3 part series. What he found was that to date, there were 20 firefighter deaths during "search and rescue" operations.

Grandview FD and KCFD worked an apartment fire this morning. Three people were rescued and one person died in the fire. One firefighter was rescued and sustained 2nd degree burns.

This past weekend was the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation 34th Annual Memorial Service. After the service, Brody Channel, a firefighter from Little Rock (AR), stopped on I-270 to assist a Police Officer with saving the life of a young child.

Pleasant Hill FD in Eastern Wilkes County, NC fought this fire this past Wednesday. Units arrived to find a single story dwelling well involved. Firefighters made a quick exterior knockdown using an 1 3/4" line and a 2" line (pictured in the video). One crew made an quick primary search of the south end of the home.

While the beginnings of challenge coins may be questionable, most point to World War 1 as the beginnings of this tradition. Beings that the military began the ritual of not only creating coins, but trading and "challenging" with them, it is only fitting that the fire service has taken the idea and run with it since there are so many veterans in the fire service.
