37-year-old man dies following Mariners Harbor fire

Caleb Wilder, a Delaware resident who was spending time with friends on Staten Island, died trying to get other residents inside the burning Brabant Street building to safety, police sources said.
Wilder -- who was outside at the time -- entered the six-story building in an attempt to put out flames on the second floor, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. When the fire got out of control, he shifted to assisting others who were evacuating, the source said.
Fire crews found Wilder unconscious and unresponsive, and in apparent cardiac arrest, when they arrived to fight the blaze at the Mariners Harbor Houses, located at 124 Brabant St., just before midnight, an NYPD spokesman said.
FDNY officials on-scene told the Advance that EMS workers resuscitated him and took him to Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, in critical but stable condition. However, after arriving at RUMC, Wilder was pronounced dead, the spokesman said.
Five other fire victims were also taken to RUMC with minor injuries, he said.
The city medical examiner will determine the official cause of Wilder's death.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the blaze, which officials determined started in apartment 2-B.
