After months of tension between the Howard Beach Citizens Safety Patrol - HBCOP and the 106th Precinct, the volunteer group’s leader has apologized to the police for taking credit for reducing crime in the area and leaking emails between himself and an officer.“We don’t risk our lives like the NYPD Officers that do every minute of the day,” Joe Thompson, president of the patrol, said in a Facebook post on his group’s page last Saturday. “Therefore, my opinion is we had nothing to do with the reduction of the crime in the 106th Pct. And I apologize for those statements I have made.”

Six men allegedly caught with lots of pot

Six men were charged with allegedly illegally possessing more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana and between $200,000 and $300,000 in bundled U.S. currency Monday.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Drug Enforcement Task Force members found the men allegedly shifting cardboard boxes containing the drug from an 18-wheel semi-tractor-trailer parked in Elmhurst into a U-Haul truck and a smaller cargo van at approximately 1:25 a.m. on Monday.

Kew Gardens man is up you-know-what’s creek

Newtown Creek will never be a clean body of water if people like Kew Gardens resident Manuel Acosta keep illegally dumping hazardous materials in it.
That’s according to officials such as city Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Emily Lloyd and state Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Marc Gerstman, who applauded the rendering of a $110,000 fine against Acosta’s electropolishing company last Wednesday in a joint statement.

Bus crash leads to crack cocaine bust

The driver of a car involved in a collision that sent an MTA bus into a house on Saturday was arrested for allegedly having 64 bags of crack cocaine in his vehicle.
Police said Chevon Parchment, 24, of Elmont, LI, allegedly engaged police in a chase while driving on Rockaway Boulevard.

A call for safer streets and tougher penalties

Elected officials and residents of Flushing rallied at the intersection of College Point Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue at noon on Tuesday in support of improved traffic safety and awareness in the wake of a fatal hit-and-run early Sunday morning. A few feet away, a large electric NYPD sign flashed a reminder of the incident and asked for anyone with information to call 1 (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
Nearby, a lone bouquet of flowers had been placed as a memorial to Mariano Contreras, 41, who was struck and killed by a vehicle traveling northbound just after one a.m. on Sunday, as he attempted to cross the boulevard from east to west a little south of Roosevelt Avenue.

New arrest in Leta Webb murder in Jamaica

A second man has been charged in the murder of Leta Webb, the South Jamaica grandmother blown away by gunfire when she answered her door late at night last spring.
The suspect, Sahel Green, 19, of 126th Street in South Ozone Park, was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police announced Thursday.

Jamaica man gets 15 years in pain pill ring

A Jamaica man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in leading an oxycodone distribution ring on Long Island.
Cedric Moss, 48, was sentenced on Sept. 30 by United States District Judge Joanna Seybert, according to a joint statement issued by Kelly Currie, acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and James Hunt, special agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in New York.

Community Board 11’s packed agenda stretched Monday night’s meeting at MS 158 in Bayside to almost three hours, with several issues taking prominence, among them a hotly-contested presentation by the Department of City Planning and a discussion on the controversial proposal to convert Bayside Jewish Center into a new high school [see separate stories].
Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) shared with those in attendance information on several pieces of legislation she is working on in our nation’s capital.
