PROMOTING EMPATHY & DEESCALATION IN CRISIS SITUATIONS
Yesterday NYPD recruits were introduced to CIT: Crisis Intervention Team training.
CIT involves police officers using crisis communication techniques to assist people in crisis situations. The CIT model is based on Listen•Assist•Collaborate and promotes the use of active listening skills and demonstrating empathy in order to gain voluntary compliance. The use of these skills also increases safe outcomes for everyone involved.
CIT training is also currently being given to our patrol officers as well.

    • Shelley Dunham How about teaching the community some respect and lessons on taking responsibility. We all took Psychology and Sociology and ' How to Handle Difficult People, How to De escalate tough Situations, Conflict Management and so on and so on. Mutual respect when entertained by the Officers and the Communities is always the best conflict resolution.

    • Matthew Hatter The fact that we need facebook posts for an nypd "pat on the back" in regard to crisis intervention training is sad. Keep up the public relations efforts, you certainly have a lot of work to do.

Pope Blesses True Crime Fighter
As Pope Francis visited the September 11 Memorial today he stopped to meet and bless NYPD Detective Terry McGhee. Detective McGhee and his colleagues on the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force keep New York City and America safe for all. Detective McGhee needs a wheelchair to get around due to a spinal injury, however he never misses a day of work. Described by friends and fellow crime fighters as only one thing – “relentless.” “That’s what drives us to get out of bed every morning — knowing you’ll have some sort of impact, that you will make a contribution,” says Detective McGhee.
