In 1943, a German diplomat warned a Danish MP that there was a plan to arrest and deport the Danish Jewish community to concentration camps, just as the Nazis had done to millions of other Jews across Europe.
This warning reached the leaders of the Danish Jewish community who were urged to leave or go into hiding.
Sweden, which remained neutral during the Second World War, was offering a safe haven for refugees and so Bent Melchior and his family fled the Nazis in a boat in the dead of night to safety.
He spoke to Witness about the mass escape of Denmark's Jews.
Witness is a World Service programme of the stories of our times told by the people who were there.
