FIREHOUSE SHOT UP IN GRAND RAPIDS

Saturday, October 24, 2015   Police believe the person who fired the shots that hit a Grand Rapids fire station were not targeting firefighters.The fire chief told 24 Hour News 8 the shooting at the LaGrave fire station appears to be a random act.

“There’s no indication that the LaGrave Street fire station was targeted or firefighters are being targeted,” added Fire Chief Laura Knapp.

Lt. Rich Clark, who is vice president of the firefighters union, said firefighters do not feel endangered in this case.

Police believe the gunfire may be related to a call they received around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday for shots fired in the area.

Witnesses told officers they heard a fight in the area of Sheldon Avenue and Weston Street SE before the gunshots. Officers found three shell casings but no suspects or victims.

Police said three shots hit the LaGrave Avenue fire station. However, Clark says firefighters counted five bullet holes.

Friday, October 23, 2015   There were tense moments for some firefighters in South Amherst last night, after they were held hostage on a call.

Assistant Chief Dennis Hevener was among those to respond to a brush fire behind a home on Hornyak Court.

He said a man was soon outside pointing a rifle at him and two others, telling them to stand near a truck.

"We just kept asking him, 'What can we do for all of us to just walk away from this?'" Hevener said. "'What do we have to do to walk out of here?'"

"He says 'Give me a beer. It's all I want, is a beer. I want one more beer before we leave,'" Hevener said.

That suspect was identified as Roy Griffith, Jr. His mother said he has a history of mental illness, was drinking for days, and was off his medication.

He was also believed to be burning the leaves that led to 911 calls for firefighters. In all, three Firefighters were kept hostage while two others took cover in the woods.

Daughter of Hospitalized Firefighter Talks About Her Mother's Treatment

Friday, October 23, 2015   A Robertson County Firefighter is still in the hospital, for inhaling too much smoke while battling a grass fire.That fire sparked Wednesday near Wheelock.Julie Clark, a Wheelock volunteer firefighter, was one of several firefighters who helped stop a grass fire Wednesday afternoon near Highway 46 and Hughes Cutoff Road.

The fire burned an estimated 30 acres, but no buildings were damaged.

Caitlin Crutchfield says her mother is now in stable condition. Julie Clark was taken by a medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston for taking in too much smoke during that fire.

She said we when heard the news about her mother this was her reaction, "Fear obviously, and concern. It's my mom and being in the fire service I know the sort of risks there are going into this. We've seen in recent years what can happen on scenes, so mostly it was taking a deep breath and staying calm until I could find out something more."

Dayton Fire Rig Strikes Bicyclist

Friday, October 23, 2015   U University of Dayton Student suffered serious but non life threatening, when he was hit by a Dayton fire truck on Brown Street.

The 18-year-old’s name was not released, but a University of Dayton spokesman confirms the victim is a student.

The student has been taken to Miami Valley Hospital. Brown Street has been reopened to traffic.

Dayton police said the collision happened while the student was in the bike lane and the fire engine was attempting to turn into the UDF parking lot.

BUCKET SYSTEM BEING USED TO HELP PREVENT FF CANCER 

Friday, October 23, 2015    The National Volunteer Fire Council has drawn firefighters from nearly 50 states to talk about national safety measures in Concord. The group is looking into ways to protect firefighters from carcinogens, which cause cancer.Locally, Concord Fire Department has implemented extra measures for cleaning gear. It’s a new effort they hope other areas will pick up.

Firefighters at Station Nine in Concord are now trained to protect themselves from carcinogens.

"We've had a lot of debris on our gear, and then we get right back in our truck, bring it right back to the station, and they started noticing those carcinogens was leaving traces in those trucks,” said Robert Hagy, an engineer with Concord.

Since 2002, the International Association of Firefighters attributed 60 percent of line of duty deaths to cancer.

UPDATE: ATL APPARATUS CRASH

Friday, October 23, 2015   Two firefighters were injured while responding to warehouse fire in southwest Atlanta on Thursday.It happened around 3:30 p.m. on Lee Street near Van Buren Street in southwest Atlanta.

Fire officials said the two injured firefighters were riding in an SUV when a fire engine collided with them. The accident caused the fire engine to burst into flames. SKYFOX 5 flew over the scene and found the cab of the engine completely gutted by the fire. No one in the fire engine was injured.

Firefighters were responding to a 2-alarm fire at warehouse in the 1900 block of Murphy Avenue at the time of the fire. No word on the cause of that fire.

The names and conditions of the firefighters in the SUV were not immediately available. Both were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Amongst the presentations (and working break out sessions) include Boston Fire Commissioner Joe Finn-and the efforts he and his Boston Firefighters IAFF Local are taking to reduce firefighter exposures and cancer.

2 FFs HURT IN NJ 8 ALARM FIRE

Thursday, October 22, 2015    Officials say two firefighters have been injured and hundreds have been displaced by a fire that ripped through an apartment building in Passaic.The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m., on the top floor of a 5-story apartment building located at 290 Gregory Ave. Within an hour, the fire grew to six alarms as flames burst through the roof of the building. By 11 p.m., the fire grew to eight alarms.

Passaic County spokesman Keith Furlong tells NJ.com that two firefighters suffered minor injuries. One had burns to the neck and another was injured when a ceiling partly collapsed on him. They were taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Patterson.

Furlong says between 300 and 400 people have been displaced.

A Red Cross spokeswoman says disaster relief personnel are at the scene and have set up a reception area for the displaced.

2 YORK PA FFs BURNED AT FIRE 

Thursday, October 22, 2015    Two firefighters sustained burns as they fought a three-alarm blaze in York on Wednesday night, according to an ABC27 news report. The burns were minor, however, according to the report.

The fire broke out at a house in the 300 block of Poplar Street at about 5:37 p.m. The blaze spread to three other houses before crews extinguished it by about 7:30 p.m., according to York City Fire Department.

FFs RELEASED - SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN OHIO HOSTAGE SITUATION

Thursday, October 22, 2015    Two firefighters were taken hostage Wednesday night after they responded to a fire in the woods on Hornyak St. in Amherst, according to Amherst Fire Chief Al Schmitz.

A neighbor called in the fire and Chief Schmitz said as they were fighting the fire, the homeowner became agitated and took the assistant chief and a lieutenant hostage with a rifle.

The call came in just after 6:30 p.m. and was peacefully resolved a couple hours later. Both firefighters are okay; the suspect was taken into custody.

FIREFIGHTERS BEING HELD HOSTAGE-OHIO 

Thursday, October 22, 2015    Happening right now in Lorain County, Ohio. Initial reports are that South Amherst FF's were on an open burn complaint. During the incident, something went wrong and now reports are the crew is being held hostage in a wooded area. SURVIVING WILDLAND FF RELEASED TO REHAB CENTER IN WA 

Wednesday, October 21, 2015    The firefighter severely injured in an eastern Washington wildfire flare-up that killed three of his comrades is out of intensive care and in rehabilitation at a Seattle hospital.Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said Tuesday that Daniel Lyon has had all the major burn-related surgeries he needs and is currently in satisfactory condition.

The 25-year-old suffered burns on more than 60 percent of his body on Aug. 19. Since then officials say he has endured skin grafts and constant pain.

In September doctors said they expect Lyon to make a full recovery.

Twenty-year-old Tom Zbyszewski, 26-year-old Andrew Zajac, and 31-year-old Richard Wheeler died in the same flare-up near Twisp after their engine crashed down an embankment and was caught by the quickly moving fire.
     

 

2 NASHVILLE FFs BURNED AT MOTEL FIRE

Wednesday, October 21, 2015   Two Nashville firefighters received minor burns while battling a fire at a south Nashville motel. All of the guests made it out safely. Crews were called to the Travelodge on Wallace Road, not far from Harding Place, before 10:30 a.m. The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

When crews arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames billowing from the second floor of the building. First responders had to cut portions of the roof open in order to create a vent.

Brian Haas with the Nashville Fire Department described the conditions as "ferocious," as firefighters battled flames and extremely high winds.

He said one of the firefighters was taken to an area hospital with minor burns. 

Fortunately, crews were able to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to additional units.
