DCFD vs. DCPD CRASH 

Tuesday, October 6, 2015   A D.C. Fire Department Engine hit a Metropolitan Police Cruiser Monday early-evening in the 2900 block of Porter St. NW.MPD's Media Affairs says the D.C. police officer was injured and transported to a nearby hospital. The officer was conscious and breathing.

Tuesday, October 6, 2015   Our hearts were heavy this past August when three wildland firefighters were killed battling the Twisp River Fire in Washington State, and two died battling fires in California. These tragedies shook their communities and saddened our nation. These devastating deaths and other injuries shed light on the overwhelming challenges our wildland firefighters endure as they strive to control the damage these fires inflict on thousands of acres of what is considered “open space.”

During TAMPA2, we discussed the evolution of wildland firefighting now as compared to a decade before with the first summit. Undoubtedly, every firefighter has a stake in wildland firefighting. It makes us better strategically when we understand the skills, resources and challenges needed to respond to and control fires under seemingly uncontrollable conditions.

FIREFIGHTERS TRAPPED, COULD FEEL THEIR FACES BURNING: REPORT 

Tuesday, October 6, 2015   The four Northern California firefighters were in serious trouble almost immediately after a helicopter dropped them near ground zero of what they thought would be a small blaze.The wind picked up dramatically and unexpectedly, turning the small grass fire into a raging inferno that surrounded the men, forcing them to issue a mayday call over the radio before seeking shelter in emergency tents they carried in their backpacks.

All four were badly burned, and a new report by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection raises questions about their equipment and training.

MAYDAY IN MISSOURI - VIDEO

Monday, October 5, 2015   A Grandview fire captain suffered second-degree burns after making a mayday call while battling a deadly fire.One person died in the fire that broke out about 9:50 a.m. Monday near Main Street and Grandview Road.

When crews arrived on the scene, heavy fire and smoke could be seeing coming from the building housing seven apartments on the second floor.

Firefighters heard people yelling for help and made entry through the front door, making their way upstairs. Crews managed to get three people out safely.

After firefighters were out of the building, they were going through the rest of the second-floor apartment when part of the ceiling collapsed, trapping firefighters. Those firefighters made their way out of a window to safety.

The tenant that died in the fire has not been identified at this time.

Firefighters said there were working smoke detectors in the building.

ARK FF CRUSH BY FIRE TRUCK

Monday, October 5, 2015   A firefighter is in the hospital after a fire truck pinned him to another truck Saturday afternoon.Chief Lynn Blake with the Wynne Fire Department said the department was paged to help the Parkin Fire Department on a fire call when the incident happened.

Firefighter Rick Wimberley arrived on the scene in his personal truck, waiting for crews to come.

As crews were coming to the scene, one of the Parkin fire trucks drove too close to Wimberley and ended up pinning him between his truck and the fire truck.

Wimberly was transported to Regional Medical Center.

His condition is still unclear at this time, though Wimberley's son Michael Wimberley wrote in a public Facebook post that his father "is doing as good as can be." Michael Wimberley said he has a fractured pelvis and a lot of bruises. Doctors are also checking for shoulder injuries.
     

 

CANADIAN FF INJURED AT FIRE 

Monday, October 5, 2015   A firefighter was injured and three people were displaced following an early morning blaze in Manotick on Monday.At just after 3 a.m., Ottawa fire received a call from the residents of a two-storey home at 1100 West Avenue. According to the 911 call, the home’s back deck had caught fire.

Shortly after arriving on scene, crews declared the blaze a two-alarm fire.

One firefighter suffered burns to an arm before the fire was doused at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Two adults and one child were displaced, but were not injured, Ottawa fire said.

The cause of the fire and an estimate of damages were not immediately available.
     

 

DRUNK DRIVER STRIKES RIG ON THE HIGHWAY IN RI 

Monday, October 5, 2015   State Police arrested a Providence man for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs after striking a Pawtucket fire truck that was rendering aid at a car crash crash on Rte. 95 north in Pawtucket Saturday.

At around 7:50 a.m., troopers were called to respond to a crash north of Exit 29 in Pawtucket. While responding, troopers learned that the fire truck was struck in the rear at the Broadway overpass. The investigation revealed that a 26-year-old Providence man, Jeremy Ramirez, of 36 King Phillip St., was operating recklessly on Rte. 95 north when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a five-axle fuel truck. The vehicle then traveled into the right breakdown lane striking a concrete barrier before striking the rear of the Pawtucket fire truck.

Ramirez showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody and transported to Rhode Island Hospital. Police said he was loud and hostile at the scene as well as in the emergency room. He was released fr... [ more ]
     

 

COLUMBIA, SC FF RESCUED AFTER DISAPPERING IN FLOOD RESCUE 

Monday, October 5, 2015   Rescue crews found themselves desperately searching for one of their own Sunday during intense flooding across the Midlands. 

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins told WLTX that authorities around 11:30 a.m. lost contact with a firefighter who was responding to a call on Bluff Road. 

After about 40 minutes they found the firefighter clinging to a tree. Crews used a boat to retrieve the firefighter and bring him to safety.

FF INJURED IN MICHIGAN WALL COLLAPSE

Monday, October 5, 2015   One firefighter received minor injuries after part of a wall collapsed during the tail end of a house fire Sunday, Oct. 4 in Lapeer County's Oregon Township. Lapeer City Fire Department Capt. Tom Wittke said firefighters were called around 1 p.m. to the 4100 block Skinner Lake Road, off Bronson Lake Road, after a neighbor called in an explosion at the home.

"The house was fully involved when we arrived on location," said Wittke, with firefighters quickly going defensive to contain the blaze. The injured firefighter was taken to McLaren in Lapeer for treatment.

Several fire departments, including Lapeer City, Elba Township and Columbiaville all responded to the call. 

No other injuries were reported and no was home at the time of the fire, which Frank Mielke said rattled his home next door in the early afternoon Sunday.

FF FALLS IN WATER IN SC RESCUING PEOPLE FROM COLLAPSING BRIDGE 

Monday, October 5, 2015   Lambert Narlock lost his mother earlier this year. But she was still with him when he needed her.At 11 a.m. Sunday, Narlock was riding down Cleveland Street when he noticed something wrong as he crossed Polin’s Bridge near Santee State Park.

A group of people were gathered on the bridge, photographing the rushing water. But it was coming out of three spots instead of the normal two, he said.

“I was like, ‘Man, that doesn’t look right,’” Narlock said.

The Elloree volunteer firefighter decided to check out the bridge and noticed about 20 feet of the bridge’s foundation was gone. About 10 feet were left.

“I said ‘Off the bridge, everybody. I’m shutting it down,’” Narlock said. It took him four or five minutes to get everyone off the bridge.

“It went bonkers. You could hear things moving. You could feel the bridge moving,” Narlock said.

FIRE POLICE OFFICER STRUCK IN PA 

Saturday, October 3, 2015   A York Area United fire police officer directing traffic in Manchester on Friday morning escaped serious injury when he was struck by a vehicle being driven by a fellow firefighter, according to officials.Northeastern Regional Police Chief Bryan Rizzo said the struck officer was transported to York Hospital for observation and didn't appear to have suffered serious injury.

It appears he was knocked down by the force of the low-speed impact, the chief said.

It happened at the intersection of Main and Maple streets, according to the York County 911 Center.

The firefighter behind the wheel was arriving on the scene of what had been reported about 9:50 a.m. as a house fire in the first block of North Main Street in the borough, Rizzo said, and was driving his personal vehicle.

Directing traffic: The struck fire police officer was directing traffic, the chief said.

APPARATUS CRASH IN GEORGIA 

Friday, October 2, 2015   Highway 53 was closed after a driver ran into a fire engine responding to an emergency call.
The Fire Department confirmed 11:15 a.m. the truck was heading east on Highway 53 where traffic was stopped.
A woman who drove around the stopped traffic hit the fire truck.
The collision forced the truck to leave the road and down a 30 foot ravine.
The two firefighters on the truck were taken to North East Georgia Medical Center, in Gainesville, for treatment of minor injuries.
The woman driving the car was also transported to North East Georgia Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
Highway 53 is closed while heavy machinery is brought out to remove the fire truck from the ravine.  
     

 

4 FFs SUE AFTER AUGUST 2014 APPARATUS CRASH 

Friday, October 2, 2015   Four Vallejo firefighters seriously hurt in the August 2014 crash of their ladder truck filed a lawsuit Tuesday blaming their injuries on the manufacturer and seller of the truck, as well as the state Department of Transportation and the driver of a Mercedes-Benz with which they collided, court records state.Mitchell Stockli, Frederick Taylor, Daniel Saballos and Walter Trujillo were responding to a kitchen fire shortly before 6 p.m. Aug. 9, 2014, when they collided with a Mercedes-Benz near the intersection of Sonoma Boulevard and Maine Street in Vallejo, the suit states.

The crash caused the ladder truck to roll over twice. It was ripped in half and twisted. The front of the truck was flipped onto the driver’s side, while the rear part of the tiller truck was upright. The rear cab, used to help steer the ladder truck, was destroyed, the suit states.

AKRON FF FALLS THRU FLOOR 

Friday, October 2, 2015   Two Akron firefighters avoided injury after falling into the basement of a burning home late Thursday night.When firefighters arrived at the home at the corner of Baughman Street and Grace Avenue the porch was on fire.

Firefighters said that the first arriving crews quickly got the majority of the fire out when the two firefighters entered the home in thick smoke. As the firefighters entered the front door they fell through a large hole in the floor into the basement.

Both firefighters were able to find their way out of the basement uninjured.

Neighbors told newsnet5.com the home has been vacant for about five months and they believe it was scheduled to be torn down.

The cause of the fire is unknown but arson investigators were at the scene.
     

 

MA FF TREATED FOR SMOKE INHALATION 

Friday, October 2, 2015   China Green on Burrill Street in Swampscott suffered an estimated $300,000 in damage when a fire started Thursday afternoon in the restaurant’s kitchen.Swampscott Fire Capt. Graham Archer said a 911 call came in at 4:27 p.m. Thursday about a fire at the restaurant which is attached to a residence. When firefighters arrived, there were flames showing through the restaurant’s roof and plenty of smoke.

Two employees inside the restaurant at the time the fire started were able to safely evacuate and no one was home in the attached residence at the time, Archer said. A Swampscott firefighter was taken to the hospital Thursday night for observation after suffering possible smoke inhalation.

The heaviest of the fire was in the restaurant’s ceiling, and firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading into the residence.
