Fire Rescue 1- Utah Gives College Credits to FF's

Firefighters may get fire certs for college credit in Utah

Utah Sen. Karen Mayne believes the bill will aid in attracting new recruits while also keeping veteran firefighters and police officers

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A bill proposed at Wednesday's interim session of the Utah Legislature may make it easier to recruit and retain those interested in a public safety career.
Fox13 Now reported that State Sen. Karen Mayne said her legislation would be a way for police officers and firefighters to easily transfer college credits for their certifications.
"The pool of people coming in is getting smaller and smaller," Sen. Mayne said.
Mayne wants college credits standardized and portable.
"We don't pay them enough, it's very difficult, it's hard on families, the hours are difficult, at best, so we need to give a helping hand and say: 'We appreciate what you do, we're going to make your higher education easier and more transferable to all those universities you want to go to,'" Mayne said.
If the bill passes, Mayne believes it will also help smaller, rural communities that don't have a large population to attract qualified firefighters and police officers.
"We need you, we need that pool to be bigger," she said. "So we need to make sure we have all the educational opportunities to keep our seasoned officers and firefighters. We want them to stay with us their whole career."
