2 DETROIT FIRE DEPT MEDICS ATTACKED, SLASHED AND STABBED - SERIOUS CONDITION

Tuesday, October 20, 2015    2 Detroit Fire Department paramedics are in serious condition after they were attacked, slashed and stabbed repeatedly while trying to help a woman on Detroit’s west side, and the suspect remains on the loose. It happened just after midnight this morning in a neighborhood just east of the Lodge Freeway along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The paramedics had been called to the area to treat a woman with an ankle injury when a man who was with the woman became “agitated” and attacked.

A male subject on scene was upset at the assessment of the medics,as they were treating her and at some point during the encounter, he produced this weapon. The suspect first went for the male paramedic, who has been working with the department for about two years. When the female paramedic, a 13-year department veteran, stepped in to help her partner, the suspect turned his attention — and his weapon — to her. Both paramedics were stabbed and slashed repeatedly before... [ more ]

ONE AUSTIN FIREFIGHTER REMAINS FOR BURN TREATMENT, OTHERS RELEASED

Monday, October 19, 2015    Two of the three firefighters injured when a floor collapsed while they battled a fire yesterday in Austin have been released from the hospital and were resting at home Monday morning.
The released firefighters are Lt. Jeremy Burke and Firefighter Willie Cook. The third injured Firefighter, Jimmy Casares, remained at San Antonio Military Medical Center and is expected to be there for one to two weeks. He is a 4 year member of the AFD. The three firefighters entered a burning building in search of a person they believed to be inside, but was actually out of town. While inside, the floor beneath them collapsed and they fell to the first floor. Burke and Cook managed to escape on their own, but Casares ended up trapped in the building for about 15 minutes, fire officials said. No civilians were injured in the fire, but one Austin police officer was treated for smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

POWER GETS TURNED ON DURING INCIDENT AT DC STATION

WUSA9 Video
Sunday, October 18, 2015   This (Friday) morning, there was another example of why the Federal Transit Administration is taking control of oversight of safety for the problem-plagued subway system serving the Nation’s Capital. Surae Chinn from WUSA-TV in Washington reports that DC Fire and EMS Department firefighters were surprised when third rail power came up and trains started moving while they were still handling a small fire on the track at the Foggy Bottom Station.Communications between Metro’s Rail Operations Control Center (ROCC) and area fire departments is a decades old problem that Metro fails to seriously address. On the evening of May 10, 1996, I was at Virignia’s Pentagon City Station as Arlington County firefighters investigated an arcing on the tracks that sent a fireball through the tunnel into DC. Firefighters and a battalion chief were quite upset over the difficulty in getting Metro to follow their instruction on shutting third rail power. This greatly delayed the handling of the inc... OK FF CATCHES EXPLOSION ON HELMET CAM

Friday, October 16, 2015    A firefighter had a closer view than he wanted of a tank explosion in Owasso; and because he had a camera on his helmet, we can see exactly what he saw.

Limestone Fire Captain Don Boyle was as close to the tank that exploded as anyone and recognizes he's fortunate he wasn't hurt.

A TRAGIC LOSS IN CONNECTICUT. DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF WALKS ONTO TRACKS, STRUCK BY TRAIN

RIP Chief
RIP Chief
Friday, October 16, 2015   Branford Deputy Chief Ronald R. Mullen died last night when he walked onto an Amtrak railroad track and was struck by an oncoming Shoreline East passenger train near Pleasant Point Road in Pine Orchard. Mullen, who was 55, served with the Branford Fire Department for nearly four decades and was considered one of the best arson investigators in the state. He gave key testimony recently at the Kathy Hardy arson-murder trial in Hartford, testimony that helped to win a conviction of Hardy’s murderer. Mullen’s father was a former fire chief in the department.
Amtrak police, who are in charge of the investigation, were putting together the pieces of the case today.  Amtrak investigators found Mullen’s wallet near the scene, which is how they learned his identity.

Police and fire officials who were at the scene last night were not able to identify Mullen and were stunned to learn this morning that he was the one killed. Mullen served as interim deputy chief... [ more ]

FIRE APPARATUS STRUCK WHILE BLOCKING SCENE-EXTREME FIREFIGHTER CLOSE CALL

Friday, October 16, 2015    An engine from the Ritchie VFD (Prince George's County Fire/EMS, MD Co 37) was parked in a barrier (protect the scene) position on the beltway, when they were violently struck from behind about 2300 hours last night. According to PG County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor, they had just arrived at the scene of a separate accident where a rescue squad and ambulance were already working a minor accident - the first arriving units were actually positioned in front of the scene due to confusion over a flat tire they stopped at first on the other side of the road vs the minor accident,
The engine company was positioned and 2 of the 5 Firefighters dismounted to determine whether any additional hands would be needed to assist. Just after they dismounted, a van at speed struck the rear end of the engine (pictures on our homepage as well as links below).

Units on the scene were used to extricate the entrapped van driver, who was transported to the hospital in serious condition. The th... [ more ]

39, yeah, THIRTY NINE FIREFIGHTERS LAID OFF DUE TO IRRESPONSIBLE LOCAL GOV'T

Friday, October 16, 2015   Irresponsible local government leadership again. ANOTHER community gets a SAFER grant BUT FAILS to plan ahead to fund firefighter positions locally. In this case, the city hall dwellers said that they way they look at it, the Feds "loaned them 39 firefighters"...just for a few years. WTF!? The Waterford Regional Fire Department in Michigan has now laid off 39 firefighters hired with a federal grant that ran out after two years.
Chief John Lyman said firefighters were hired in 2013 from a $7.6 million Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant that provided funding for extra staffing.
The grant originally gave the township “optimal” staffing, four firefighters on each engine, and briefly brought the department’s headcount to 144. That number fell to 141, due to attrition, and now stands at 104.
The township was able to keep the firefighters on for a half-year longer than they expected to stay, Lyman said.
