Next year at the IAFF Biennial Convention, there will be a open seat for the office of General Secretary-Treasurer; the number two position in our IAFF.

I am proud to report that Brother Edward “Edzo” Kelly, from Ladder 17, has announced his candidacy for General Secretary-Treasurer of the IAFF.

Edzo proved to the members of Local 718 early on that he had what it takes to be a Union leader. From his early days as a Executive Board Representative to his years as Local 718 President, he fought for what was right.While serving as Edzo’s Vice President, I witnessed first hand his commitment to the men and women of the Boston Fire Department. He fought a day-to-day battle with the prior City administration to improve the safety of our job, secure fair wages and benefits, and demanded that we firefighters be treated with the respect we deserve.

When Edzo resigned as President of Local 718 to seek the office of the President of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, he did so with the same conviction he demonstrated in Boston.

Once elected, Edzo became the voice of the PFFM, advocating for 12,000 Fire Fighters and Emergency Medical Technicians throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Under his leadership, he ensured that every Local was represented, from the four (4) member Local, to the four hundred (400) member Local. Edzo recognized the value of helping to ensure that each Local receive the best possible representation and assistance, particularly with issues surrounding collective bargaining and arbitration; because an unfavorable decision for one Local, could adversely effect EVERY Local in the PFFM.

Edzo is the future of our International Union. I have no doubt that if elected, he will continue his fight on behalf of the 300,000+ members of the IAFF with the same determination.
