What are you bringing to the fire floor?
Just as we must be prepared for the “usual” or “routine” residential fire, we must also be prepared for fires in standpipe-equipped or high-rise buildings. One major component of preparation i

    • Jon Wetzel The fire department I recently retired from refused to train on standpipe operations let alone build a toolbox. No matter what I tried I kept running into that saying we have never needed to why change? Best of luck to them if the local former hospital or the high school catch fire.

Stretching hoselines in high-rises is so labor intensive that we must be certain we’re advancing to the right location; it’s not a simple task to reposition the line. Who confirms the fire location of the fire at your high-rise job - the Engine or the Truck?
Locating the fire in a high-rise building is challenging but crucial.

After removing his SCBA and turnout gear, he sat on the engine’s tailboard and told his battalion chief (BC) that he “was just a little winded.” About 5 minutes later, the FF stated “his chest was hurting.”
Physical stress during SCBA training was the trigger.

“The only way we can get an accurate, realistic snapshot of where fire departments are at is by getting as many of them as possible to complete the survey. That’s why it’s critical for us to get participation from every fire chief across the country,” Hylton Haynes, senior research analyst for NFPA’s Fire Analysis and Research division.
Questions are now available online for the first time.

    • Jon Wetzel One downfall of this plan is that there will be fewer overall people period. Benton Harbor usually runs two or three per shift with one dedicated police and one dedicated fire. Most often they get one or two call backs but for the most part they fight fires with three to five personnel. Very dangerous. Seriously consider all of the options before jumping in.

    • John OBryan A fire fighter and police officer mind set are entirely different. I would no more be a police officer as my brothers in blue would run into a burning building. The idea was knocked around in our town back in the 80's. Thank God cooler minds prevailed. It is a bad idea.
