Our rescue teams recently triumphed at the UK Rescue Challenge. The event saw teams from around the country put through their paces in a number of demanding scenarios aimed at testing key skills such as incident command, trauma care and technical rescue.
The Brigade's line rescue team maintained their position as the best in the country, completing a clean sweep of all the awards up for grabs and our trauma team claimed first place in the trauma challenge earning themselves the right to represent the UK at next year’s World Rescue Challenge in Brazil.
To top it all, the extrication team put in a great performance to finish sixth out of a field of 23 teams, a position that in absence of a challenge last year, means they will be representing the UK at this year's World Rescue Challenge in Portugal in October. Well done all!

A WW1 soldier who late became a London firefighter has been nominated for a Southwark Blue Plaque award. Sergeant George Arthur Roberts has been nominated in recognition of his contribution to the borough at a time of great change and turmoil.
Born in Trinidad in 1890, George served in the First World War and went on to become a firefighter based at New Cross fire station where he was made a section leader in 1943.
He was later awarded a British Empire Medal for general dutie...

  • Syd Platt As he was involved in discussion/ education during the Second World War, do you know if he was involved in the FBU and if so was he also involved in the second front efforts re building radio sets for the red army on his one day off a week, they were difficult times and all of the firefighters of that era were men and women to be proud of.

From baking a few cakes for his watch to vying for the coveted position of Star Baker. Firefighter Mat Riley will be hoping he avoids Soggy Bottoms as he shows off his baking talents to the nation on this year’s Great British Bake Off.
The hit BBC One show starts at 8pm tonight and Mat will be firing up his oven and hoping he creates an Even Bake while fighting off competition from 11 other contestants.

This is the scene that Euston and Islington’s firefighters faced earlier when a tourist bus collided with a tree on Woburn Place in Bloomsbury.
Two fire engines and a fire rescue unit attended after an overhanging branch ripped the roof off the bus.
Four people were taken to hospital after the collision and 40 other uninjured passengers were looked after by police and LAS staff in a nearby building.
