• Greece: Athens Stock Exchange ended down more than 16%

The Athens Stock Exchange was reopened this morning after five long weeks of closure. From the first transaction, the Athex had lost 22% before stabilizing around 16% in mid-day. The banks, which account for about 20% of the Greek stock index, have particularly suffered: they plunged on average, at the opening of almost 30%. Not since December 1987 to find traces of such a decline. At the time, the losses had amounted to 15.3% in one session.

• Swimming: Florent Manaudou world champion in the 50m butterfly

The influential chief of staff of President Ali Bongo, Maixent Accrombessi, will remember his summer move to Paris. As he was leaving the capital, he was arrested by officers from the Central fight against corruption and financial and tax offenses (OCLCLIF) as part of a preliminary inquiry on July 9 2007 for"foreign public official corruption" and "laundering", as revealed by Jeune Afrique.
