The European Commissioner for Migration met Tuesday in turn with the French and British interior ministers on the situation in Calais (north-west France), where migrants multiply intrusion attempts in Channel Tunnel to England.
Dimitris Avramopoulos described the talks with Bernard Cazeneuve respectively Theresa May and "constructive" and "welcomed the close cooperation between the two countries on this issue" in a statement on Tuesday evening in Brussels. He recalled that the Commission could provide them with support in terms of treatment of asylum cases, but also identification of migrants in cooperation with countries of origin to facilitate their return.
"The Commission will now pay France a first tranche of 20 million euros" in the framework of the European Fund for asylum, migration and integration, he said. He recalled that it had already paid € 27 million in the UK. The total amounts provided for these two countries as part of the fund, respectively 266 million euros for France and 370 million for the United Kingdom in 2014-2020.
At this stage, "neither France nor the United Kingdom have requested extra help and I have full confidence in their ability to manage the situation," said Mr. Avramopoulos, for whom "more generally, the situation Calais is a striking example of the need to achieve a better level of solidarity and responsibility in the way we manage migration pressures in Europe. "

- No no, especially not let Europe get involved, we will find ourselves obliged to keep and accommodate more like royalty.
- And then there are no jobs in France? Holland can not reverse the unemployment curve!
- "I have full confidence." Not us
- Only an assertive sovereignty of France and England can overcome this disaster. Brussels and its lamentable Schengen zone remains out of it.
- It is important not to that European technocrats get involved. They know that transform pumpkins into carriages, moderately affluent poor which 2/3 are children ... and the generous solidarity idea of Europe into a nonsense! We must let the two sovereign states such as France and the UK and their two chefs face off in a debate head-to-head in the hope that this confrontation does not end in a historic and tragic head-to-tail as was already the case in the twentieth century.
