A police officer assigned to Mayor Bill de Blasio's security detail was shot with either a BB or pellet gun last night near Gracie Mansion. Two teens were taken into custody for question.
According to the NYPD, the incident occurred around 7:15 p.m., explaining that the female officer was "was struck in the back by an apparent BB/pellet... There have been two previous reports of apparent BB/ pellets causing damage to windows in this same area. The Mayor was not in the area of Gracie Mansion at the time of this incident."
The officer was treated by Lenox Hill Hospital and her injuries are considered minor. She was released. The Daily News reports that she and her partner were getting out of their car when she was struck: "The pellet broke the plainclothes offier’s skin, but did not lodge in her body."
The two individuals were taken into custody near 170 East End Avenue, a condo building. The Post reports:
The suspected shooter, identified by law-enforcement sources as Mike Verbitsky, 20, was believed to have been taking shots out a window of his apartment building at 170 East End Ave., across from the mayor’s official residence.
Verbitsky is a known troublemaker, according to his neighbors.
Cops quickly entered Verbitsky’s building, where they questioned his girlfriend, Gabrielle Gleyberman, 19, inside a 10th-floor apartment, sources said.
While Gleyberman was distracting police, Verbitsky sneaked out a separate door and fled downstairs, according to law-enforcement sources.
However, there were cops outside and cops took him in.
De Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray and son Dante were in Connecticut this weekend, to take Dante to Yale.
