Employees of the federal asylum agency Fedasil are sounding the alarm. They say they can no longer cope with the surging numbers of asylum seekers. The Christian trades union ACV staged a protest action this morning, using lemons to symbolise their position: "We have been squeezed out." 130 extra staff have been promised for the future, but is unclear when they can start.

19/08/15 - Belgian farmers are continuing their protests against the low milk prices. They blocked the entrance to Liège Airport last night and blocked the E411 Motorway in Luxembourg this morning. The farmers claim their protests are a success, as 3 in 4 motorists understood their concerns.

Power cut hits 3,000 families in Flemish Brabant

A large area east of Brussels in Flemish Brabant was confronted with a power cut this morning. The power cut began around 8.20am but most problems were solved around 10.30am. Eandis, the company responsible for the electricity network, says that over 3,000 families and businesses were left without power.

'And... action!' for the Hollywood movie 'Emperor' in Ghent

18/08/15 - The shooting for the Hollywood movie 'The Emperor' in the historic city centre of Ghent has kicked off. The film brings back the age in which Charles V lived (he was born in Ghent in 1500). The filming at the Saint Michael's Bridge will take place from Tuesday to Thursday. The crew will then move to the Counts' Castle and also to the Ghent suburb of Drongen. 'Emperor' is directed by Lee Tamahori.

18/08/15 - Last year saw a record number of applications made by private companies to install CCTV on the workfloor. The Privacy Commission received almost 1,200 applications, almost double the number of the year before that. Employers use cameras to reduce the number of thefts and to avoid discussions when somebody is being dismissed.

Wall insulation figures are up

18/08/15 - Figures for cavity wall insulation for the first 7 months of the year saw a 15 per cent rise on the year. The number of 12,423 houses is even 42 per cent up compared to 2013. "This is good", says the Flemish Energy minister Annemie Turtelboom. "This is the moment to invest in energey efficiency." The Flemish Energy Agency says that only 47 per cent of the Flemish houses boasts proper wall insulation at present.

Bus driver in "unreal" roadside baby story

A bus driver of the Flemish public transport company De Lijn had the surprise of his life this morning, when he discovered a new-born baby in the roadside. He noticed the abandoned child when taking his morning break in the municipality of Sint-Truiden (Limburg). The child, a girl, was taken to hospital. She has been given the name 'Marie'.

Football fans in Sint-Truiden can now buy players themselves

Fans of the Limburg football club Sint-Truiden will be able to join crowdfunding projects that should enable their club to offer young players a contract. If the player is sold at a higher price later on, investors will benefit and make a profit. "It's a mix between investing in a player's talent and investing your cash", says General Manager of Sint-Truiden Philippe Bormans.

Two of the leading figures of the Flemish christian democrats (CD&V), Wouter Beke and Kris Peeters, have received death threats. The news comes after earlier reports that the federal Asylum Secretary, Theo Francken of the Flemish nationalist N-VA, has also been confronted with death threats.

6 new bridges in Antwerp inaugurated

18/08/15 - Six new rail bridges across the Albertkanaal in Antwerp province were used for the first time this morning. The bridges, partly funded by the EU, should allow taller ships to pass underneath, to stimulate inland shipping. At the same time, the rail bridges should boost rail cargo transport.
