The semi pulled to the side of the road about 725 South on Idaho 27. The fire engine arrived and as firefighters were putting out the fire, a woman in a Chevrolet Silvarado crashed into the back of the engine. Firefighters said the driver failed to slow down and was driving through smoke. Multiple fire departments are still working on the fire, including Albion, Declo, Oakley and Minidoka County. A reporter at the scene said piles of straw were still burning on the side of the road about 4 p.m.         2 FFs SUFFER SMOKE INHALATION IN OHIO Friday, August 7, 2015   Several people, including firefighters, were transported to area hospitals Thursday evening after a fire broke out inside a three-story, 12-unit apartment building.Jackson Fire Chief Tracy Hogue said one resident was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation, and four others were treated at the scene. Two township firefighters were transported to a hospital due to the heavy smoke. Another two were treated on scene. None of the injuries appeared serious, the chief said.An unspecified number of residents were displaced Thursday night. It might be days or weeks before they can return to gather salvageable belongings or stay the night, Hogue said.Firefighters had to move quickly upon arrival just after 6 p.m. at Yorkshire Apartments, 3616 Wales Ave. NW, according to Hogue. [ more ]         COPS TRYING TO BE FIREFIGHTERS, ALONG WITH ONE FF INJURED AT CHICAGO BLAZE NBCChicago Video Thursday, August 6, 2015   Two Chicago police officers and a firefighter were injured in a blaze on Chicago’s South Side early Thursday morning. The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. in the 12400 block of South State Street in the city's West Pullman neighborhood. Plant That Can Cause Blindness Found in Midwest Officials said two police officers, a 30-year-old and a 31-year-old man, were taken to Metro South Hospital for smoke inhalation while a firefighter was reported have had minor injuries at the scene. The firefighter refused treatment, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The police officers arrived at the scene before fire crews and ran into the burning home to check if anyone was inside. The blaze took more than hour to put out. Neighbors said a man and his children live in the home, but it was not clear if anyone was home at the time of the fire. [ more ]         FF FALLS THRU ROOF AT SAN DIEGO FIRE Thursday, August 6, 2015  A fire captain fell through the roof while battling a restaurant fire on Miramar Road Wednesday, which forced a worker to be hospitalized. Smoke filled the air above the Bombay Grill just before 10 a.m. The restaurant is located north of MCAS Miramar just west of Interstate 15.As San Diego Fire-Rescue crews climbed on top of the building to put holes in for ventilation, SDFD Capt. Vadid Cisneros fell through the roof. Officials estimate he fell approximately 15 to 20 feet to the floor below. He walked out of the building on his own, officials said. At the moment, Cisneros doesn’t appear to have any injuries but was transported to a nearby hospital to be evaluated, according to fire officials. The only worker inside the business was also taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. [ more ]         FF OVERCOME/KILLED BY CO/SMOKE AT WILDFIRE Wednesday, August 5, 2015  A firefighter who went missing on Thursday and whose body was found on Friday died of a combination of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation, the coroner said on Tuesday. David Ruhl. 38, was found following an overnight search battling a fire east of Mount Shasta. Ruhl, an engine captain with the Mystic Ranger Division out of Rapid City, South Dakota, was on temporary assignment to the Big Valley Ranger District in California. He worked for the forest service for 14 years, and previously served in the U.S. Coast Guard. The forest service is investigating his death. They will lower flags to half-staff through Aug. 6 in honor of Ruhl. Ruhl is survived by his wife and two children. In 2014, Ruhl was a fire school coordinator in the Black Hills National Forest, according to the Forest Service. Ruhl also served as the liaison for the veterans fire team, a program where firefighters and veterans returning home from overseas could work side-by-side to help protec... [ more ]         CA FF INJURED AT FIRE Wednesday, August 5, 2015  A firefighter was recovering Wednesday after being hurt while battling a blaze that destroyed an upstairs unit at a Carlsbad apartment complex, Carlsbad Fire said.The fire started just before 2 a.m. in a unit on the second floor of the apartments at 935 Laguna Drive. Five people were inside the apartment at the time of the fire and managed to get out safely. Firefighters contained the flames to just one unit, but the unit was destroyed. A second unit at the complex was severely damaged by water used in the fire-fighting effort. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for minor injuries sustained while fighting the flames, but was treated and released, according to Carlsbad Fire. Firefighters had to cut power to the apartment complex, and thus all 12 residents were seeking temporary housing while waiting for power to be restored. [ more ]         2 COPS, 2 FFs INJURED AT NJ APARTMENT FIRE NJ.com Video Wednesday, August 5, 2015  Two police officers and two firefighters were hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a fire ripped through an apartment building. At approximately 1:15 p.m., Officer Ryan Vaccaro and Detective Jeffrey Malone of the Ocean Township Police Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2120 Apollo Street in the Twinbrook Village Apartments, Lt. Kevin Faller said. Upon arriving, the officers observed that the landscaping on the south side of that building was in flames and the fire quickly spread to the structure, Faller said. Officers evacuated the residents of the building as fire fighters worked to extinguish the blaze, Faller said. The building has 12 apartment units, all of which were left uninhabitable and that approximately 35 people were displaced, Faller said. [ more ]         CINCY's FFs HELMET WAS STRUCK BY BULLETT Local12.com Video Wednesday, August 5, 2015  A Cincinnati firefighter now has proof a bullet hit his helmet at a fire scene. Firefighter Kevin Kirkendall was on Carplin in Avondale July 18. Police originally said debris from the fire hit the helmet. But Local 12 News has learned Tuesday, April 4, that results from crime lab testing show the presence of lead. The bullet did not pierce the helmet. [ more ]   Blast Injures 12 German Firefighters Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A fire and a subsequent explosion at a former air-raid shelter in the northern German city of Hamburg left 38 people injured on Tuesday, authorities said.The city's fire service said the fire broke out early in the morning in a carpentry workshop in the six-story building that dates back to World War II, news agency dpa reported. An explosion occurred as firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze. It wasn't clear what caused that blast, but around 100 tons of essential oils were stored in the building. The injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to suspected broken bones; 12 of the injured were firefighters and 19 people were taken to hospitals, the fire service said. The fire brigade evacuated more than 60 people from nearby residential buildings. Rather than sending officers back into the building, authorities planned to flood it with foam to extinguish the fire.         FF INJURED AT TRENTON VACANT FIRE Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A firefighter suffered a minor injury early Tuesday morning battling a fire in a vacant building in the city's North ward that gutted the structure, officials said.The firefighter suffered a shoulder injury during a fire at a vacant commercial building on the 300 block of Brunswick Avenue around 3 a.m., Battalion Chief Gus Takacs said. The firefighter, who was not identified by fire officials, was treated and released from Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, Takacs said. The fire was reported by a passing ambulance crew who saw smoke coming from the rear of the building, most recently occupied by a church, Takacs said. The building was "well involved'' when firefighters arrived. Crews battled the fire for about an hour before it was under control, Takacs said. [ more ]         FDNY FFS SUE OVER THUMB INJURIES FROM NEW RIGS Tuesday, August 4, 2015  Five firefighters have crushed their thumbs in the doors of the FDNY’s brand new firetrucks within six months of each other and are suing or plan to sue the city over what they call a faulty door design. The Bravest — Christopher Wilson, Anthony Delgado, Daniel Haase, Scott Hernandez and Patrice Casimir — say the inside handles on the rear doors of the Kovatch Mobile Equipment pumper trucks are situated too close to the hinge and leave no clearance for their fingers, according to court papers filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court. “They need to respond to emergencies,” said attorney Dana Cutting, who represents the firefighters. “In all these cases, they’ve become the emergency.” Each of the men, who work at fire stations in The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, suffered gruesome injuries including fractures, deep cuts and the loss of a nail from getting their thumbs caught, court papers say. [ more ]         MD FF INJURED AT LARGE HOUSE FIRE Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling a house fire Tuesday morning in Marriottsville.The Howard County Fire Department confirmed the fire began around 5:20 a.m. in the 3000 block of Homeland Way. It is believed the fire began after the home was struck by lightning. Fire officials said when they arrived on the scene units found fire through the roof and smoke visible through the attic. Shortly thereafter, crews were evacuated from the home due to the roof collapsing. The fire was under control by 6 a.m., but crews remained on the scene to knock out hot spots before they cleared out around 7:40 a.m. In all, over 45 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the event. Howard County crews were assisted by units by the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department from Carroll County. No other people were reported injured. Damage is estimated to be more than $250,000. The Red Cross responded to assist the residents.         California best man hit, killed by speeding fire truck on way to brother’s wedding rehearsal dinner Tuesday, August 4, 2015   A California best man on his way to his brother’s wedding rehearsal dinner was killed when a firetruck slammed into his car.Eric Stein, driving with his wife Ksenia, was just a turn away from the Agoura Hills event venue when he was struck Friday night. His family, gathered at the venue for dinner the night before his brother’s wedding, watched in horror as a fire truck plowed into the couple’s Ford Focus, ABC 7 reported. Stein was supposed to be the best man at the Saturday ceremony. Eric Stein died at the scene, while Ksenia Stein was airlifted to a local hospital where she is still recovering. The Steins were newlyweds themselves, having married in February after eight years of dating. [ more ]         FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY WHILE RESPONDING-U.K. RIP Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A Firefighter was killed in the Line of Duty when his car hit a wall in West Sussex was responding to a 999 (9-1-1) false alarm. Retained (call) Firefighter Paul Keenor, 23, was driving to quarters when he crashed at about 23:55 on Saturday. The building contractor, from Ashurst Wood, was a crew member with East Sussex Fire and Rescue (ESFRS). He had been based at Forest Row fire station since 2011. He had been responding to his alerter as a result of a call for help when the crash happened. A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the call turned out to be a false alarm. No other vehicle was involved. FF Keenor, who had Type 1 diabetes, was a keen rugby player and a father of two sons, aged three and 17 months. His father Graham said he was diagnosed as a diabetic at the age of 10 but did not let it stand in his way.
