Lone Survivor Holds Clues to Wash. Fatal Fire Truck Wreck

Tuesday, August 25, 2015   U.S. Forest Service officials said Sunday they don't yet know why three firefighters were killed and a fourth critically injured last week after they were involved in a vehicle accident while battling a blaze on a hillside near Twisp in Okanogan County.John Phipps, a Forest Service official leading the agency's investigation, said officials began conducting interviews about the incident Saturday and were planning to complete most of them Sunday.

Officials have said the vehicle accident may have prevented the firefighters from fleeing when the fast-moving wildfire turned on them near Woods Canyon Road.

The four men were in a small fire engine that Mike Williams, forest supervisor for the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, described as a flatbed truck equipped with a water tank and hoses.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference in Wenatchee on Sunday afternoon, Phipps said there were no immediate witnesses to the vehicle leaving the road othe... [ more ]

"Everyone in that event was doing the best they could and if you have been in one of those environments it's a challenge," he said.

The Twisp River Fire reported around 12:30 and by about 3 p.m. it was showing increased activity amid shifting winds.

Just one hour later, firefighters were reporting fatalities and calling for a Life Flight helicopter.

Three firefighters inside the engine - Andrew Zajac, Richard Wheeler and Tom Zbyszewski - were killed.

A fourth person, Daniel Lyon, survived with burns to more than half his body.

FIREFIGHTERS, DEMENTIA & ALZHEIMER'S?

Friday, August 21, 2015   Well, admittedly, I knew little about this disease until about about two years ago when we started seeing issues involving my Mom, Mrs. G. Some "weird" stuff went from my denial to a hard smack of reality. We have now become well aware and have learned about it-and while a tough situation for our family, and so many others-she has some decent medication, she has mostly really good days-she lives by us now-and we are together almost daily.

So....I was on Twitter this morning (@billygoldfeder) and this caught my attention.
A FIRE SERVICE FILM ...on dementia!? Huh!?
Seems that the Hereford & Worcester Fire & Rescue Service in the UK is closely involved with dementia charities and works in close partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK. As part of their involvement, they created a short film that raises awareness of the issues faced by the early onset of dementia.

TX POLICE OFFICER REAR ENDS FIRE TRUCK

Lufkin PD Video
Friday, August 21, 2015  A Lufkin Police officer unable to control his car in rainy conditions, will be written-up by the department after he struck the rear of a fire truck that was responding to a car accident.According to Lufkin Police Chief Gerald Williamson, the fire truck had slowed down as it approached the accident scene to avoid debris in the road.

Rookie officer Zachary Klein, who was traveling below the speed limit at 28 mph, hit his brakes, but skidded into the back of the truck amid rainy conditions at speeds of 15-20 mph. Because he was able to slow the vehicle, his airbag did not deploy.

“I applied the brakes but realized they were locking up and the vehicle was not slowing down because of the recent rain,” Klein said in a statement to Chief Williamson about the incident. “I released the brakes and attempted to apply the brakes again. I was unable to stop before striking the rear of the fire truck.”

No one was injured in the crash, which was investigat... [ more ]
