That was the domino effect of events that unfolded beginning with a man who allegedly struck a parked car on Railroad Avenue. John Lawrence Ball of Lynnewood Drive in St. Michaels allegedly ran into a parked car, pushed it against two other cars, damaging them, then turned his car over on its side on Railroad Avenue in St. Michaels. When police arrived, they made sure no one was hurt, according to St. Michaels Police Chief Anthony Smith, then discovered that Ball had an outstanding warrant from the Department of Natural Resources for harvesting oysters when the season was closed. They mentioned it to Ball, and he “fled the scene,” according to Chief Smith. [ more ]       Tweet   PG CO FF INJURED AT TOWNHOUSE FIRE Sunday, August 23, 2015  A Prince George’s County firefighter was injured Saturday in a two-alarm townhouse fire in Suitland, Maryland.The fire began around 11 a.m at a three-story residence on Apple Orchard Lane. Debris from the roof fell onto the firefighter, who had to be taken to University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. The firefighter, whose name was not released, is expected to survive. A spokesman for the fire department said the fire caused $500,000 in damage to three town homes. The blaze appeared to be accidental and likely started on the back deck, fire officials said. Meanwhile, another Prince George’s County firefighter was released from the hospital after being treated for serious burns from a fire on Thursday. Zachary Proffen, 23, was burned as temperatures reached about 800 degrees at a burning apartment building in Laurel, Maryland. It could be a while before he returns to duty.       Tweet   WA BURNED FF IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER SURGERY Saturday, August 22, 2015  Daniel Lyon, injured in the Central Washington wildfires, has gone through surgery, but remains in critical condition.Susan Gregg, a spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, says Daniel Lyon of Puyallup went through a surgery on Friday that sought to remove damaged tissue. Gregg says Lyon remains in the Intensive Care Unit. She says he is unable to speak because he's on a respirator, but is able to respond when his parents and others speak to him. Lyon, 25, was working his first season as a firefighter when the flames of a wildfire swept over him. Approximately 60 percent of Lyon's body is burned, according Dr. Tam Pham of the University of Washington Medical Department. Though he couldn't speak to his parents during their visit to Harborview on Thursday, his father, Daniel, said his son was aware they were at his bedside. [ more ]       Tweet   CHIEFS TRUCK STRIKES PATIENT AT SCENE WINKNEWS Video Saturday, August 22, 2015  Internal e-mails from Collier EMS say a patient on the ground was run over by the Immokalee Fire Chief’s truck.There were a total of 5 accounts written about what happened on August 14th, 2015 at 12:42pm. The crews were working a single car accident along SR 82 and Corkscrew. There were five people inside the car, one had been ejected. According to the email accounts, paramedics were loading up patients when they heard someone yell “stop”. Some turned to see a white truck rolling toward patient Eulalia Juan Pedro who was strapped to a backboard on the ground. The emails say the truck tire came to rest on the patients stomach stating “fire fighters were trying to push it back off the patient”. They added, “the truck was up against the pt abdomen and the pt head was under the front end of the truck.” Immokalee Fire Chief Paul Anderson says the truck was his but maintains it was stopped before touching the patient. [ more ]       Tweet   FF SUFFERS SMOKE INHALATION AT FIRE IN TEXAS Friday, August 21, 2015  A two-alarm fire along U.S. Highway 377 in Argyle on Wednesday afternoon left one firefighter hospitalized. Argyle Fire Chief Mac Hohenberger said the plume of smoke from a second-story balcony at a professional office building could be seen from a mile away when the department was first dispatched at about 4 p.m. The building was cleared of occupants, but one firefighter was injured. Hohenberger could not release the firefighter’s name as of Thursday evening. Hohenberger said the firefighter — an eight-year veteran with the department — suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to an area hospital where he remained as of Thursday afternoon. “It’s possible there are burns to his trachea due to the inhalation,” he said. “I am not sure when he will be released.” The quick response, with assistance from Denton, Justin and Flower Mound fire departments, saved the brick building from serious damage, said Hohenberger, adding that the fire was out by 4:20 p.... Friday, August 21, 2015   Well, admittedly, I knew little about this disease until about about two years ago when we started seeing issues involving my Mom, Mrs. G. Some "weird" stuff went from my denial to a hard smack of reality. We have now become well aware and have learned about it-and while a tough situation for our family, and so many others-she has some decent medication, she has mostly really good days-she lives by us now-and we are together almost daily. Seems that the Hereford & Worcester Fire & Rescue Service in the UK is closely involved with dementia charities and works in close partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK. As part of their involvement, they created a short film that raises awareness of the issues faced by the early onset of dementia. more ]        Tweet   TX POLICE OFFICER REAR ENDS FIRE TRUCK Lufkin PD Video Friday, August 21, 2015  A Lufkin Police officer unable to control his car in rainy conditions, will be written-up by the department after he struck the rear of a fire truck that was responding to a car accident.According to Lufkin Police Chief Gerald Williamson, the fire truck had slowed down as it approached the accident scene to avoid debris in the road. Rookie officer Zachary Klein, who was traveling below the speed limit at 28 mph, hit his brakes, but skidded into the back of the truck amid rainy conditions at speeds of 15-20 mph. Because he was able to slow the vehicle, his airbag did not deploy. “I applied the brakes but realized they were locking up and the vehicle was not slowing down because of the recent rain,” Klein said in a statement to Chief Williamson about the incident. “I released the brakes and attempted to apply the brakes again. [ more ]       Tweet   FATAL FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDING CRASH TODAY IN MARYLAND Friday, August 21, 2015   One civilian and her dog died in a serious crash in Baltimore County late this afternoon that involved a responding Baltimore County FD EMS unit.The collision involved a passenger car and that Baltimore County EMS vehicle. Doris Scott, 59, died and so did a small dog in the car with her. A Suburban used by the Baltimore County Fire Department was on its way to a call when it hit the back of a Honda at approximately 1600 hours, Our condolences and prayers for all those involved.       Tweet   TRIAL BY FIRE: AN ARTICLE FROM LAST YEAR ABOUT 20 YEAR OLD FIREFIGHTER TOM ZBYSZEWSKI WHO DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY YESTERDAY Friday, August 21, 2015   Here is an article about the above Fallen Firefighter Tom Zbyszewski, a 2013 high school graduate, who was fighting fires for the first time last summer as part of a five-person Forest Service engine crew. Zbyszewksi said he had never felt personally in danger while battling the fast-moving Carlton Complex fires. They said their supervisors and crew members follow safety protocols that call for identifying escape routes and safety zones wherever they are working. “They really keep us safe. There’s no one going to the head of the fire. That would be way too dangerous,” Zbyszewski said. RIP. Washington State along with much of the West Coast is being clobbered by wildfires-and have few resources available....as the East Coast keeps an eye on Hurricane Danny.       Tweet   FIRE BLAZES AT PARIS SCIENCE MUSEUM; 2 FIREFIGHTERS INJURED Thursday, August 20, 2015   A fire damaged multiple levels of the main science museum in Paris on Thursday, and two firefighters suffered injuries fighting the flames.The blaze broke out overnight in a section of the Cite des Sciences in northeast Paris that is under construction, city fire service spokesman Gabriel Plus told The Associated Press. The cause of the fire is unclear. It raged for several hours, prompting concerns that adjacent exhibit halls and the museum's IMax movie theatre could also catch fire. But by midmorning, more than 100 firefighters had brought the blaze under control, Plus said. The museum will stay closed Thursday and firefighting teams will continue to monitor for other fire risks. The sprawling museum complex houses interactive children's exhibits as well as exhibits on space, light, geology and other subjects. FIRE Thursday, August 20, 2015  Four firefighters were injured while fighting a two-alarm fire at an apartment building in Prince George’s County on Thursday.One suffered burns to his hand that were serious but not life-threatening, two others sustained less serious burns and the fourth injured an ankle. The three with burns were taken to the burn unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and the fourth was transported to another area hospital. More than 20 residents and a pet dog were displaced by the fire, which broke out in a three-story, eight-unit apartment building in the 11700 block of South Laurel Drive in Laurel, according to Mark Brady, a spokesman with the Prince George’s County Fire Department. All of the residents escaped the building before firefighters arrived, including at least one person in the top-floor unit where the fire began, he said. The fire gutted the apartment where it erupted. The cause was under investigation.       Tweet   LODD: PORTUGUESE FF KILLED IN CRASH Thursday, August 20, 2015  A Portuguese FF died today due to injuries sustained when his fire truck overturned Wednesday in the region of Cascais, Portugal. FF José Moreira, 41 years old, was transferred to a hospital in the city of Lisboa, but did not resist. Other FF sustained non-life threating injuries. The crew was responding to a fire in the region of Talaíde.       Tweet   Separate From The LODD's: FIRE APPARATUS DESTROYED IN WASHINGTON STATE Thursday, August 20, 2015   The fire was in a wheat field near Gish Road, Lewis County officials said, but it was near a large, 10,000-pound propane tank on a chicken farm. Donna Sauer says she saw dense, black smoke when she looked out her front yard Wednesday.  She immediately started packing up her animals and getting ready to go. “I was a little on edge because i moved here from Missouri, and my house burned down three years ago. So I was like, not again!” Dozens of families in the area had to evacuate, when the brush fire made its way to a chicken farm. There was a 10,000-pound propane tank on the property and firefighters were worried it might explode. “This is the nightmare for a rural district,” says Salkum Fire Chief Duran McDaniel.
