[ more ]   Blast Injures 12 German Firefighters Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A fire and a subsequent explosion at a former air-raid shelter in the northern German city of Hamburg left 38 people injured on Tuesday, authorities said.The city's fire service said the fire broke out early in the morning in a carpentry workshop in the six-story building that dates back to World War II, news agency dpa reported. An explosion occurred as firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze. It wasn't clear what caused that blast, but around 100 tons of essential oils were stored in the building. The injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to suspected broken bones; 12 of the injured were firefighters and 19 people were taken to hospitals, the fire service said. The fire brigade evacuated more than 60 people from nearby residential buildings. Rather than sending officers back into the building, authorities planned to flood it with foam to extinguish the fire.         FF INJURED AT TRENTON VACANT FIRE Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A firefighter suffered a minor injury early Tuesday morning battling a fire in a vacant building in the city's North ward that gutted the structure, officials said.The firefighter suffered a shoulder injury during a fire at a vacant commercial building on the 300 block of Brunswick Avenue around 3 a.m., Battalion Chief Gus Takacs said. The firefighter, who was not identified by fire officials, was treated and released from Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, Takacs said. The fire was reported by a passing ambulance crew who saw smoke coming from the rear of the building, most recently occupied by a church, Takacs said. The building was "well involved'' when firefighters arrived. Crews battled the fire for about an hour before it was under control, Takacs said. No other structures were threatened, but the building was destroyed and it is earmarked to be razed, Takacs said. The cause of the fire is under investigati... [ more ]         FDNY FFS SUE OVER THUMB INJURIES FROM NEW RIGS Tuesday, August 4, 2015  Five firefighters have crushed their thumbs in the doors of the FDNY’s brand new firetrucks within six months of each other and are suing or plan to sue the city over what they call a faulty door design. The Bravest — Christopher Wilson, Anthony Delgado, Daniel Haase, Scott Hernandez and Patrice Casimir — say the inside handles on the rear doors of the Kovatch Mobile Equipment pumper trucks are situated too close to the hinge and leave no clearance for their fingers, according to court papers filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court. “They need to respond to emergencies,” said attorney Dana Cutting, who represents the firefighters. “In all these cases, they’ve become the emergency.” Each of the men, who work at fire stations in The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, suffered gruesome injuries including fractures, deep cuts and the loss of a nail from getting their thumbs caught, court papers say. [ more ]         MD FF INJURED AT LARGE HOUSE FIRE Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling a house fire Tuesday morning in Marriottsville.The Howard County Fire Department confirmed the fire began around 5:20 a.m. in the 3000 block of Homeland Way. It is believed the fire began after the home was struck by lightning. Fire officials said when they arrived on the scene units found fire through the roof and smoke visible through the attic. Shortly thereafter, crews were evacuated from the home due to the roof collapsing. The fire was under control by 6 a.m., but crews remained on the scene to knock out hot spots before they cleared out around 7:40 a.m. In all, over 45 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the event. Howard County crews were assisted by units by the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department from Carroll County. No other people were reported injured. Damage is estimated to be more than $250,000. The Red Cross responded to assist the residents.         California best man hit, killed by speeding fire truck on way to brother’s wedding rehearsal dinner Tuesday, August 4, 2015   A California best man on his way to his brother’s wedding rehearsal dinner was killed when a firetruck slammed into his car.Eric Stein, driving with his wife Ksenia, was just a turn away from the Agoura Hills event venue when he was struck Friday night. His family, gathered at the venue for dinner the night before his brother’s wedding, watched in horror as a fire truck plowed into the couple’s Ford Focus, ABC 7 reported. Stein was supposed to be the best man at the Saturday ceremony. Eric Stein died at the scene, while Ksenia Stein was airlifted to a local hospital where she is still recovering. The Steins were newlyweds themselves, having married in February after eight years of dating. Los Angeles County Fire Department is investigating the fatal crash as Stein’s heartbroken family accused the fire truck’s driver of reckless speeding. “We don't have Eric with us and we never will. [ more ]         FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY WHILE RESPONDING-U.K. RIP Tuesday, August 4, 2015  A Firefighter was killed in the Line of Duty when his car hit a wall in West Sussex was responding to a 999 (9-1-1) false alarm. Retained (call) Firefighter Paul Keenor, 23, was driving to quarters when he crashed at about 23:55 on Saturday. The building contractor, from Ashurst Wood, was a crew member with East Sussex Fire and Rescue (ESFRS). He had been based at Forest Row fire station since 2011. He had been responding to his alerter as a result of a call for help when the crash happened. A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the call turned out to be a false alarm. No other vehicle was involved. FF Keenor, who had Type 1 diabetes, was a keen rugby player and a father of two sons, aged three and 17 months. His father Graham said he was diagnosed as a diabetic at the age of 10 but did not let it stand in his way. Since Commissioner Joe Finn  took the reigns, among numerous leadership changes, CANCER and his IAFF Local 718 Firefighters have become a major priority. As you know, cancer is the leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty deaths in the United States. Cancer caused 60 percent of line-of-duty deaths for career firefighters between 2002-2014, according to International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) data. Naturally, volunteer and call Firefighters across North America even more so increase the overall numbers. DO YOU REALIZE: Cancer has caused 67 (SIXTY SEVEN) percent of the Boston Fire Department's line-of-duty deaths for the same period.... [ more ]   2 MANCHESTER FFs INJURED AT 2nd ALARM Sunday, August 2, 2015  Two firefighters were injured while battling a large building fire on 2nd Street in Manchester.Officials tell News 9 that the fire reached three alarms. The fire involved two buildings on the street. The two firefighters who were injured both suffered heat exhaustion. One of them also had chest pains. The fire chief said the fire started on the rear porch of 178 2nd St. The building next door was heaving damaged and other buildings in the neighborhood have some damage. The Red Cross tells New 9 that they are assisting seven families displaced following the fire. Arnold Mikolo has a third-floor apartment in one of the buildings. "My friend gave me a call. He said, 'Hey our house is burning.' I couldn't believe it," Mikolo said. He was at church when the fire started. "Right now, I don't know what is going on in my mind. [ more ]         CHICAGO FF FALLS ILL AT FIRE Sunday, August 2, 2015  A Chicago firefighter was hospitalized Saturday morning following an apartment fire in Bridgeport, officials said.The 55-year-old fire officer suffered medical problems as crews were cleaning up following the 6:30 a.m. fire in the 500 block of West 31 st Street, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Jeff Lyle. He initially was taken to Mercy Hospital and then transferred to Stroger Hospital for further treatment and evaluation. Crews originally were called to what was described as a rubbish fire, but it was upgraded to a still-and-box alarm, which sends at least eight pieces of fire equipment to a scene, when it was determined to involve an apartment over a business, Lyle said. The fire was extinguished by about 6:55 a.m. and the fire officer suffered the medical problems after that, Lyle said. Doctors were evaluating several things, including whether heat might have played a role in what happened, Lyle said.         3 INJURED IN MD APPARATUS CRASH Sunday, August 2, 2015  Three people were taken to the hospital after a firetruck was hit by a vehicle in Churchton on its way to a call Saturday afternoon, according to the county fire department.Around 3:45 p.m., a firetruck from the Shady Side station responding to a call had an accident with another vehicle in the area of Franklin Manor Road and Route 256. Three people were transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center. The two firefighters in the truck were not hospitalized. The damage to the firetruck is minor and it will continue to operate, said said Capt. Russ Davis of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. No further information on the accident was available Saturday night.         BEWARE OF THE TRUSS! REMEMBERING THE FDNY WALDBAUMS FIRE & THE LINE OF DUTY DEATHS Sunday, August 2, 2015   On August 2, 1978: 6 FDNY Firefighters were killed in the Line of Duty, and more than 35 injured, some seriously. [ more ]         FIREFIGHTER TRAPPED BY FIRE LODD CALIFORNIA UPDATE RIP CAPTAIN (shown with his wife) Saturday, August 1, 2015   That Fire Captain killed at the wildfire in Northern California was scouting the area when he became trapped by the wind-stoked wildfire conditions. U.S. Forest Service Firefighter Captain David Ruhl was driving down a Modoc National Forest road in a vehicle Thursday when the fire suddenly grew and trapped him as he was trying to develop a plan of attack. Captain Ruhl, of Rapid City, South Dakota, had been on temporary assignment since June in California, where he was an assistant fire management officer for the Big Valley Ranger District of the Modoc National. He had volunteered for the California assignment. While details are still incomplete, it appears that Captain Ruhl was one of several firefighters exploring the area when the small fire suddenly expanded. [ more ]         FATAL APPARATUS CRASH IN LOS ANGELES Saturday, August 1, 2015   A 70-year-old man was killed Friday and a second person was injured in a two-vehicle collision in Agoura Hills involving a Los Angeles County Fire Department vehicle.The collision occurred about 5 p.m. on Mulholland Highway near Kanan Dume Road, according to a county fire department dispatcher. The vehicle that collided with the fire department truck, described as a camp crew carrier, went off the side of the road and firefighters cut its roof off to free someone trapped inside, according to reports from the scene. It’s unclear if that was the deceased victim or the person who was injured. [ more ]         FIREFIGHTER DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY-FOUND AFTER LOST CONTACT AT CALIF WILDLAND FIRE Saturday, August 1, 2015  We regret to advise of the Line of Duty Death of a US Forest Service Firefighter who died yesterday while responding to the Frog Fire within the Modoc National Forest outside of Alturas, CA. The fallen is David “Dave” Ruhl of Rapid City, South Dakota. Dave was on temporary assignment to the Big Valley Ranger District of the Modoc National Forest in Adin, California, as an Assistant Fire Management Officer since June 14.
