Other Firefighters are reported to be burned as well, a few hours ago. Okanogan Co. Sheriff Frank Rogers initially reported that several Firefighters were burned and transported from the scene and thought they had only suffered "non-life threatening injuries." But things turned out to be much, much worse. Things are exploding in Washington State right now. There are various reports of entire towns evacuations due to wildfires with limited resources. “I was just told that three firefighters died while battling the Twisp fire and four were injured," said Gov. Jay Inslee in a press release. “My heart breaks over the loss of life." The fire had burned 50 acres about 8 miles west of the town and was threatening 20 nearby buildings. [ more ]       Tweet   2 INJURED IN ALABAMA FIRE APPARATUS CRASH  Wednesday, August 19, 2015   Two people were sent to the hospital after multiple vehicles, included a Birmingham fire truck, wrecked in Pratt City.It happened around 2 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of U.S. 78/Forestdale Blvd. and Tribly St. As the fire truck was turning, another car made a turn at the intersection and struck the truck. Moments after that, another car came through the intersection and hydroplaned, hitting another vehicle. No one was hurt on the fire truck, but two people from the other vehicles were taken to a hospital for treatment.       Tweet   4 DIFFERENT VIEWS OF MIAMI APPARATUS CRASH  Youtube Video  Wednesday, August 19, 2015   Video has been release that shows four angles of the ambulance vs. fire apparatus crash that occurred in Miami, Florida last week. The three new angles reveal how the pumper that was responding rolled over and struck another vehicle, and also how the force of the impact caused the entire fire truck body to shift prior to rolling.         Tweet   6 FFs INJURED AT 2 FIRES IN PATTERSON  ABC7NY Video  Wednesday, August 19, 2015   Six firefighters were injured in two different but nearby house fires in Passaic County, New Jersey, that left dozens of people displaced. The first fire broke out at about 1 p.m. Wednesday on Godwin Avenue in Paterson. The fire started in one house and spread to four others. Firefighters said the homes are wood-framed structures and there's not much distance between the homes, so the fire was able to spread easily and quickly. At the same time firefighters were battling the first fire, a second fire broke out at three abandoned homes on Rosa Parks Avenue down the street.         Tweet   FF SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES IN BRAZIL  Wednesday, August 19, 2015   A FF was shot multiple times while responding to a medical emergency in a school in the city of Paranaíba, mid-west of Brazil. A man in a motorbike shot FF Fabrício de Lima Teixeira, 26 years old, in the face, arms and torso, before evading from the scene. The FF went through a surgery and is at the hospital in stable condition. The shooter was already identified and is being chased by police. The motivation of the crime is still unclear.        Tweet   NJ FF BURNED AT HOUSE FIRE  Wednesday, August 19, 2015   A firefighter was injured battling a car fire that spread to a home Monday afternoon, police said.At about 2:30 p.m. Monday, police and firefighters responded to a Jacksonville Road home for multiple reports of a car fire, Capt. Christopher DePuyt said. Upon arrival, the car, a Saturn Outlook parked in a driveway, was fully engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to the side of the nearby house, DePuyt said. Police evacuated the home and the fire department extinguished the fire, DePuyt said. One fireman from Pequannock Fire Co. 2 suffered burns to his neck and was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for treatment, DePuyt said. The homeowner said she had arrived home after driving the Saturn and noticed a strange smell in the car. She then parked the car and entered the house, DePuyt said. [ more ]       Tweet   VIDEO: FIREFIGHTERS SAFE AFTER EXPLOSION AT MARYLAND FIRE SCENE  Wednesday, August 19, 2015   Check out this video of Firefighters setting up a ladder pipe as an explosion of a diesel storage tank (BLEVE) occurred in Charles County, Maryland yesterday. It was at a barn fire in Dentsville and the video is by Deputy Chief Jeff Duer, Waldorf VFD. It shows the fire and the explosion at the 9000 block of Glock Place. 60 Firefighters from Charles and St. Mary’s counties along with members of the Amish community helped put out the fire. Firefighters in PPE were not injured. [ more ]        Tweet   FIRE CHIEF, 56, DIES AFTER HEROIC CANCER BATTLE  Tuesday, August 18, 2015   Valparaiso (IN) Fire Chief David Nondorf, 56, so sadly died yesterday after a battle with cancer."Dave Nondorf was the consummate fire chief," Mayor Jon Costas said. "He was highly respected all around the state for his dedication to the department and for his progressive leadership." Nondorf was diagnosed in 2011 with bone cancer after stepping in a hole and feeling something pop in his knee during a fire call. He underwent three cycles of chemotherapy and the week before Thanksgiving that year he had surgery to remove the front part of his shin. Nondorf seemed to be progressing well until a CAT scan in May of 2012 showed the cancer shifted to his left lung. Nondorf told The Times in an interview a year later that doctors had given him 12 to 18 months to live. Nondorf continued to work as long as possible. The culprit of the blasts is Ruihai International Logistics, which handlesmore ]       Tweet   PA FIRE POLICE OFFICER STRUCK  NBC PHILLY  Tuesday, August 18, 2015   A fire police officer was struck by a vehicle in Gilbertsville, Montgomery County late Monday morning, officials said. The ordeal began shortly after 11 a.m. as New Hanover Fire and Rescue, Gilbertsville Fire and Rescue and fire police units from both companies responded to the 1800 block of Swamp Pike for an elevator rescue.As the firefighters were clearing the call, Gilbertsville Fire Police Office James Scott, 65, was directing traffic on Swamp Pike when he was suddenly struck by a woman driving westbound. Scott was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he is in stable but serious condition. Officials continue to investigate the accident.       Tweet   TN FIRE CLOSE CALL - ROOF COLLAPSE  Tuesday, August 18, 2015    Two Knoxville firefighters escaped unharmed when a section of roof collapsed on them while battling an apartment fire just east of downtown Monday night.All of the tenants inside the 12-unit, three-story building at Green Hills Apartments, 1837 Riverside Drive, made it out safely when flames erupted from the top floor shortly after 7 p.m., Knoxville Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran said. Eleven of the units were rented, although it was not immediately known how many people were inside at the time. Fire crews quickly converged on the building when the two firefighters radioed for help after the roof caved in. "About 20 minutes into the fire we did have a ‘Mayday,' which is basically a call for help," Corcoran said. "We had some (firefighters) inside the building when the roof and ceiling collapsed on them. [ more ]       Tweet   Privacy questioned as firefighters embrace helmet cameras  Tuesday, August 18, 2015    Wheaton Maryland Rescue Squad fire captains Adam St. John and Brett Russell call helmet-mounted cameras invaluable."I think it makes anybody that wears them a better firefighter," said St. John. Video from St. John's helmet shows a house fire just days before Christmas in which Russell calls for help after falling through a floor. "I looked down and I saw this glow of orange of the fire below me and my initial thought was, one, I'm in big trouble and two, I was convinced I was going to the burn center," said Russell. With the house full of smoke, the video shows how hard it was to spot him, but the Christmas lights on Russell's decorated helmet pierced the darkness. The video of Russell's rescue is now a teaching tool. "Every time I watch it I can think about the timeline -- what I could have done differently to be able to help him find me faster than he did," said Russell. FDNY FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO FIRE, DID US MARSHALS FAIL TO COMMUNICATE PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS? 1 FDNY OFFICER SHOT  Monday, August 17, 2015   Fuming firefighters say an FDNY Lieutenant almost died because he wasn’t told by law-enforcement officials that the home he was racing into housed an armed Bloods gang leader suspected in two murders. The firefighter, James Hayes, was shot twice by suspect Garland Tyree in the smoky Staten Island home Friday morning. Lt. James Hayes "absolutely didn’t know he was heading into a situation that dangerous,” one firefighter told The NY Post on Sunday. “We’re the Bravest, not the Stupidest.” A task force of heavily armed NYPD cops and federal agents had gone to arrest Tyree early Friday for a violation of his supervised release. The violent ex-con had a long rap sheet and also was being eyed in two murders, sources said. When the agents got to the home, Tyree told them to beat it. [ more ]        Tweet   4 MD FFs INJURED AT 4 ALARM FIRE  Monday, August 17, 2015   A building used by Washington College on the Eastern Shore was heavily damaged in a four-alarm fire Saturday night, authorities said.The fire broke out shortly before 8 p.m. in a building in the 500 block of Washington Avenue that houses the Chestertown college's business office and office of information technology, according to the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company. In a news release, the company said "multiple roofs, dropped ceilings and concealed spaces" hampered firefighting operations, and the incident escalated to four alarms. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to the volunteer company. They were treated at a local hospital and have been released. Washington College spokesman Mike O'Connor said the building was a rental property. No college personnel were injured, he said.
