LA County authorities have demanded the end of a controversial program that reduced the number of paramedics on Long Beach ambulances by half, saying it compromised public safety. In July 2014, the “rapid medic deployment” moved one paramedic from each of the eight city ambulances to work on Long Beach Fire Department fire engines. An EMT replaced the paramedic on the ambulance.

If a student starts to struggle, the course instructors are available via phone or e-mail. Since students study at their own pace, it's easier to identify where they are struggling than it would be if they were teaching in a classroom environment, says instructor Kevin Justice.
Students taking the school's hybrid EMS program still receive lectures from their instructors and still have to watch PowerPoints, they just do it at home.

  • Eitan Zur Yeah, only problem being that EMS requires INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE. Kinda hard to learn how to do a good assessment when there are NO PEOPLE INVOLVED.

  • Katie Hickling I'm conflicted about this. I really loved the flexibility of this program and felt it was a great fit for me to get my Paramedic until I heard from several colleagues that they think people who come out of the program aren't as well qualified. I don't want to compromise the quality of my education but I think I could learn well this way. Any opinions from anyone whose done it?

Thanks to our sister magazine, Firehouse.com, for sharing these photos from ‪#‎FRI15‬, where, in a dramatic effort to promote firefighter safety, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department displayed a pumper that suffered extensive damage. Engine 2 was responding to a working fire with entrapment when it left a rain-slicked road and crashed into a tree. Fire officials said that seatbelts saved the lives of the four firefighters on board.

"I remember not knowing if my family was alive for two days. I remember the child found on top of an overturned car with not a scratch on him. I remember that good news should be shared right away. Bad news should be shared softly and sincerely. I remember that this would make us stronger and it has."
AMR Operations Manager for Gulfport, MS, shares memories of the hurricane and its aftermath.
