"It really is an exciting time in the prehospital arena in respect to pain control options for both adult and pediatric patients. Fentanyl has rapidly moved to the forefront in EMS, ketamine appears to be staking its claim and morphine appears to be slowly fading from prominence. Both fentanyl and ketamine have their pros and cons, but it is likely that ketamine will leave a mark on the world of prehospital medicine for many years to come." —‪#‎EMSWorldExpo2015‬ speaker Dr. Peter Antevy

"Our field is laboring under a criminal burden of mind-numbing refreshers and painful in-service trainings that aim to achieve very little and fall short. Nobody walks away having learned anything new, and nobody shows up expecting otherwise. Most continuing education courses suck. Let’s talk about how to make con-ed suck less." -Brandon Oto
Centering courses around content that relates to the students in your class is the best way to keep their attention.

  • Cheryl Limer Miller case-based teaching is best for cme, and it works best in the inevitable mixed-level class too. But ideally the cases should be pulled from the service you are teaching -- which requires a QI dept and a physician who really are involved and care enough to gather them. Rare as a flock of dodo birds...

N.C. paramedics say a new "time-on-task" policy that awards points for quick turnarounds on calls is cutting corners and endangering patients. Does your system have a similar policy in place?
The paramedics say the policy pushes them to work so fast they're worried patient care could be at risk.

Tiny Triage Device Could Save Lives on the Battlefield: Army medical researchers have developed the Compensatory Reserve Index device, which is the size of a small matchbox with a computer display. A wire connects it to a plastic clip that's placed on an injured soldier's finger and it then displays vital signs: body temperature, heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure. www.emsworld.com/12105493

Your EMS Day: This week, 18 members of the The Richmond Ambulance Authority Leadership Academy (RAALA) spent time serving the community at nearby FeedMore, packing meals for the Meals on Wheels program. In addition, RAALA members have spent the last few weeks collecting donations for a food drive and were able to present FeedMore with food and money donations that will provide over 1,600 meals. 2015 Dick Ferneau Paid Agency of the Year Award recipient RAA strongly believes that a key element of a successful agency is to be involved and integrated in the community in which it serves. What non-clinical, community-based activities are you involved with?
