EMS lacks clear and widely-adopted patient restraint practices. Recently an unrestrained psych patient in Utah grabbed the wheel of an ambulance, causing it to crash, and a man in Miss., alleged to have used LSD, died after hogtie restraint from a cardiac condition.

Both incidents have led to questions about the role of EMS in restraining and transporting psychiatric patients. Is an ambulance the right vehicle for a psych patient transfer? And once inside the ambulance consider these tips and levels of restraint while avoid these common restraint errors.
