China's Tianjin port explosion / disaster is one of world's deadliest for firefighters... ever.
21 Firefighters confirmed dead and 70+ more are listed as missing (presumed dead). Many of the missing firefighters are teenagers, some as young as 17.
The Chinese Fire Service recently released this image of (top L to R) Yang Gang, Yuan Hai, Shao Junqiang, and (bottom L to R) Tian Baojian, Zhen Yuhang, and Yin Yanrong... all who are confirmed dead.

Does your dept/brigade still get each other wet?
When I first got hired we did... then we had a Chief (no longer here) who ordered ALL water play to stop immediately. Many people got disciplined, even demoted for continuing to participate. It changed our culture and now there is little to no water play.
God bless New York's Bravest!

Congratulations FF Adrian Culcay for completing your probation. Too bad you're still wet behind the ears.

* Update on Fresno Fire, CA Captain Pete Dern
Pete was scheduled for his last major surgery last Saturday. That would have been his 22nd surgery.
Unfortunately, another burn trauma came in and they needed Dr. Dominic's medical expertise more than Pete did. So instead of surgery Pete had a dressing change.

  • LeRoy O'Neill Sounds like you people need a second burn center. Perhaps legislators get off their asses and get that done.

Hope Pete's last surgery goes well. As a former firefighter myself and a burn victim, nothing near as serious as Pete, but sheer will of purpose and determination will get him through. With the support of his family and coworkers will be the driving force.

They just find him lying on burned out rubble, and just lift him on a stretcher and walk him out. Some how I think this is Chinese produced propaganda. Sorry if this offends some just my thoughts.

  • Tom White Are you sure as a full time firefighter you can't volunteer? FDNY guys were well known for doing this for as long as I can remember. As a full time union member it is looked down upon to work for a non union, paying job. As a volunteer I don't see why there's be a problem.
  • Will Elwell Tom White, my step father was a career Lt in Cohoes Ny and shortly after he joined, in the late 80's, all new on coming members of the Union were told they'd be booted if they volunteered, he got around by having been on already, but they are still that way today. These rules usually depend on the local union leadership

I've heard that it is getting harder and harder to recruit volunteer.
Is this true?
What has been your Department / Brigade's experience(s) with recruitment over the last generation?

Tanker or vehicle's constantly needing repair. It also seems that some people want to sign up, but they don't want to serve. Some just want to wear the hat and the t-shirt.
