  • Tom White Are you sure as a full time firefighter you can't volunteer? FDNY guys were well known for doing this for as long as I can remember. As a full time union member it is looked down upon to work for a non union, paying job. As a volunteer I don't see why there's be a problem.
  • Will Elwell Tom White, my step father was a career Lt in Cohoes Ny and shortly after he joined, in the late 80's, all new on coming members of the Union were told they'd be booted if they volunteered, he got around by having been on already, but they are still that way today. These rules usually depend on the local union leadership
We ran this story when it first broke... but WAIT...
there's MORE !!!
The waitress who paid for the firefighter's meal has been revealed... Liz the waitress paid it forward... even when SHE was the one who needed help !!!

I've heard that it is getting harder and harder to recruit volunteer.
Is this true?
What has been your Department / Brigade's experience(s) with recruitment over the last generation?
