This year marks the 55th anniversary of Resusci Anne, the world’s most famous life-sized resuscitation manikin, who was created by Asmund Laerdal to help teach people CPR. Since the 1960s, how we practice CPR has changed very little but advances in technology used in conjunction with a manikin shows that improving the quality of CPR can increase survival rates. Three vehicles dedicated to responding to automatic fire alarms in the West Midlands have attended more than 400 false alarms in the five months they have been in action. West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) introduced the first of its Business Support Vehicles (BSVs) in February this year, as part of efforts to stop fire engines and crews being deployed unnecessarily. Recently, they added drone support to their repertoire of advanced gear and are already taking advantage of the many possibilities that the drones provide. With the dual mounted camera the Huginn X1 UAV, made by the Danish company Sky-Watch, is capable of taking high-resolution images and thermal imagery at the same time, making it possible to navigate both day and night.
