Heavy flames and smoke could be seen for miles Cause of fire under investigation Fire crews continue to put out hot spots Wednesday morning The fire, believed to have started in the rear of the one-story facility in the 2700 block of Culver Avenue, is under investigation, Butts said, noting “we have no idea at this time why it started.” He said there is “nothing suspicious whatsoever” about the fire that burned through most of the roof and caused a spare truck tire inside to explode. He declined to guess at estimating the dollar-figure loss. Crews received the dispatch at 6:19 p.m. Tuesday and found heavy flames and smoke that could be seen for miles, Butts said. [ more ]       Tweet   2 FIREFIGHTERS FROM THE SAME FIRE DEPARTMENT KILLED....DON'T MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.  Michael Clark, RIP BROTHER  Wednesday, July 1, 2015   Within just a few days-a fire department in West Virginia lost two members in off duty crashes. Another crash left a FF dead in the NE-leaving 3 little kids and a wife behind. The 2nd one, (in West Virginia) happened this morning at around 0300, killing 22 year old Firefighter Brandon Mooney. 22 years old. Mooney was driving a Jeep when he lost control, causing it to roll over several times before landing over a hillside. The Jeep went several hundred feet before stopping. All four of the people inside the vehicle were thrown from the Jeep. None of them were wearing seatbelts. Three women were taken to the hospital for treatment. No word on their conditions yet. Cops say alcoholic beverages were found in the vehicle and that may have been a factor in the crash. [ more ]       Tweet   19 Hotshot Firefighters Wrongful-Death Lawsuit Settlement to Achieve Changes  YouTube Video  Wednesday, July 1, 2015   Hotshot widow Roxanne Warneke recalled being "enraged" when she first visited the site where her husband William Warneke died in June 2013 along with 18 of his fellow Granite Mountain Hotshots.The terrain of the Yarnell Hill wildfire came as a shock, Warneke said, because she knew that venturing down that rocky canyon went against everything her husband had been taught in his military and firefighting training. She wanted answers. Getting those answers was not easy, however, neither for Warneke nor for the other families. Twelve of the families sued the state in June 2014 - in part to require more transparency in the investigation process. Indeed, information was central to the list of 32 steps the Arizona State Forestry Division has promised to do as a part of a settlement of the wrongful death lawsuit that the 12 Hotshot families filed. CATHLEEN ALLISON/AP  Wednesday, July 1, 2015   Two firefighters have suffered minor injuries in the Washington Fire near Markleeville, California, as efforts continue to contain the blaze, which has burned more than 17,700 acres of brush. Crews are continuing mop-up efforts on all fronts, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Genevieve Villemire. Two fire divisions have been combined on the west front, and the fire's southeast area is being attacked by air with six water-dropping helicopters, Villemire said. The two firefighters who were hurt sustained knee injuries that were not serious, Villemire said. Cooler temperatures, increased humidity and some light rain have helped reduce the intensity of the blaze. On Monday, nearly a quarter of an inch of rain fell in the northeast section of the fire, according to the National Weather Service. [ more ]       Tweet   CLOSE CALL FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE FIREFIGHTERS  Wednesday, July 1, 2015   A two-alarm fire spread quickly through a New Hampshire apartment building last night, leaving nine people homeless and the building condemned, according to the fire chief. No one was hurt, but at one point, three firefighters were surrounded by flames on the second floor of the home, prompting one of them to declare a "Mayday," a call for help that firefighters make only when they feel their lives are in imminent danger. "An experienced, seasoned Franklin Fire Department officer found the firefighters a way out of where they were, getting them out of the Mayday situation," said Fire Chief Kevin LaChapelle, declining to name the officer Tuesday night. Police and firefighters were called to 40 School St., a 2-1/2-story apartment building in the streets behind the city's center, at 6:18 p.m. after several callers reported the building was on fire, according to police. [ more ]       Tweet   6 LA FFs INJURED AT BUILDING FIRE  Monday, June 29, 2015   Six firefighters were injured while battling a fire at a single-story business in El Sereno Sunday.Crews were called to the scene at 4390 East Valley Boulevard, adjacent to the Metrolink railroad tracks just east of Soto Avenue, and several blocks from the County/USC Medical Center, around 11:30 a.m. An intensive attack began, with more than 160 firefighters called to the scene. A #LAFD spokesperson reported the fire was knocked down after two hours, 35 minutes. Fire officials asked that train operations be halted on the San Bernardino Line Metrolink tracks during the firefight. Smoke could be seen as far away as from West Los Angeles, according to City News Service.       Tweet   2 MA FFs INJURED AT MULTI-FAMILY HOME FIRE  Monday, June 29, 2015   Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries Saturday after the fire department put out a two-alarm fire at an apartment house on Bessie Street, according to Quincy Deputy Fire Chief Paul Griffith. One was treated at the scene, while a lieutenant was transported to South Shore Hospital and treated for a cut on the face, a slight concussion and dehydration. He was released later that day. Police were called to the four-family home at 1 Bessie St. at about 4 p.m. Saturday. A fire had spread from a second-floor deck into the attic. The cause was careless disposal of a cigarette, according to the fire department. The fire “spread from outside and up into the attic before it was noticed,” Griffith said. Everyone was out of the house by the time firefighters arrived, he said. No civilians were injured, and the fire was knocked down within an hour, Griffith said. The damage was estimated at $400,000. [ more ]       Tweet   FATAL WRECK - TOWER LADDER REAR ENDED IN CANADA  Monday, June 29, 2015    A man is dead after an Audi collided with the rear end of a fire truck in Toronto’s west-end on Sunday night.The incident happened just before 8 p.m. on the Highway 427 southbound ramp to Brown’s Line. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said OPP and Toronto Fire were investigating a collision in the area when an Audi slammed into the back of a fire truck. The male driver of the Audi was pronounced dead at the scene. Toronto Fire told CityNews that a female firefighter, who was in the truck, had sustained a minor injury to her arm and was treated on scene. The 427 southbound ramp to Brown’s Line was closed for the collision investigation, but has since reopened.       Tweet   DENVER FF INJURED - FELL 25' THROUGH SKYLIGHT  KDVR Video  Monday, June 29, 2015   A firefighter is recovering after falling through a roof while batting a fire just north of downtown Denver.It started as a routine dumpster fire behind a building at 3850 Blake St., but nothing is routine when it comes to fighting a fire and making sure everything is safe. The call came in about 9:30 p.m. and Denver Fire crews quickly responded. The fire from the dumpster did some damage to the side of the building so crews had to climb on to the roof to make sure they had it all put out. That’s when the firefighter stepped on a skylight and fell about 25 feet. “Because the dumpster was right next to the building, the building was scorched on the outside,” Denver Fire Lt. Mike Pylar said. “That’s why we went to the roof to make sure it’s OK, to make sure nothing on the other side of the wall was on fire.” The firefighter was taken to Denver Health Medical Center with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.       Tweet   WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER COMES UP WITH AN IDEA TO SAVE FIREFIGHTER LIVES  Sunday, June 28, 2015    It is simple, inexpensive, easy to make, and could possibly save the lives of bush firefighters across Australia and maybe the world! [ more ]        Tweet   FF FALLS FROM HELICOPTER IN BRAZIL  Sunday, June 28, 2015   A sergeant firefighter fell from a helicopter on Friday in the State of Ceará, in the Northeast of Brazil. He broke both legs and a rib and suffered injuries in his arms, but no life-threatening injury. According to the media, he was rappelling from the helicopter during a law enforcement operation, when he lost control of the descend speed.          Tweet   AMBULANCE ROLLOVER IN SC  Sunday, June 28, 2015   Myrtle Beach police officers are investigating after a wreck involving an HCFR ambulance.The ambulance driver was heading south on U.S. 17 Bypass to Grand Strand Regional Hospital just before 11 a.m. Saturday with its lights on, according to Traffic Sergeant Jim Allen with Myrtle Beach Police. The ambulance was taking a cardiac patient to the hospital at the time, according to Brian VanAernem with HCFR. Sgt. Allen said a vehicle heading east on Grand Dunes Boulevard had a green light and t-boned the ambulance. An investigation is ongoing to determine who is at fault in the wreck. The patient in the ambulance, a medic and the ambulance driver were taken to the hospital are expected to be okay. No one was hurt in the other car. Traffic is moving normally on U.S. 17 Bypass.       Tweet   UPDATE: SAN DIEGO FFs CONTINUE TO RECOVER  Saturday, June 27, 2015   Two firefighters who were jumped and stabbed by a physically imposing assailant during a medical-aid call at an East Village transit depot were recovering Thursday from their “near-death experience,” according to their boss. “I’m very, very pleased to be here today to announce that those firefighters are going to be OK,” San Diego Fire Chief Javier Mainar said during a briefing at downtown police headquarters.Ben Vernon, 32, and Alex Wallbertt, 37, were tending to an ill man at the trolley station in the 500 block of Park Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday when a bystander, 34-year-old Ryan Allen Jones, allegedly began crowding them and telling them what to do, even though he apparently was not acquainted with the patient. “He was asked several times by the firefighters to move back,” San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters. “He continued to interfere with the firefighters rendering the aid, and an altercation occurred.” more ]       Tweet   FF INJURED AT CA GRASS FIRE  Saturday, June 27, 2015   A firefighter was injured and three structures were damaged as a fast-moving fire scorched grasslands in eastern Alameda County Thursday evening, officials said. The first reports of the blaze came in just after 4 p.m. on Tesla Road near Clifford Drive southeast of Livermore, said Aisha Knowles, a spokeswoman for the Alameda County Fire Department, which was battling the fire in cooperation with Cal Fire and municipal fire departments from Livermore, Pleasanton and Fremont. The fire quickly spread to around 50 acres, but by 6 p.m. Cal Fire officials said that the blaze was contained. A firefighter was hurt, though the nature and extent of the injuries was not immediately clear.A barn, a vehicle and a shipping container were destroyed and a home was damaged in the blaze, a Cal Fire spokeswoman said. Roads in the area were closed and California Highway Patrol officers were managing traffic near the scene and crews remained on the scene to mop up hotspots, officials said. more ]       Tweet   OR FF INJURED BY FALLING SHEETROCK AT FIRE  Thursday, June 25, 2015   A Clackamas firefighter was listed in stable condition Tuesday night after they were hit by falling sheetrock.The fire at 16321 Oak Valley Drive in Oregon City was reported just before 3 p.m. It was placed under control in 45 minutes, according to Brandon Paxton, public information officer for Clackamas Fire District No. 1. While conducting overhaul, a large section of sheettrock fell about 15 feet from the ceiling and landed on his head.
