 Disturbances continue in The Hague, 

100 arrested Society July 3, 2015    


Police arrested 100 people in the Schilderswijk in The Hague on Thursday night after rioting again broke out in protest at the death of an Aruban holidaymaker in police custody. Those arrested, who included bystanders, were taken to the police station in groups in public transport buses and police vans, Dutch media report.


 However, the situation on the streets was not as violent as the three preceeding nights. 

‘There were fireworks thrown and shouting and running youngsters, but nothing compared to previous nights,’ according to NRC reporter Kim Bos. 

The Hague mayor, Jozias van Aartsen told broadcaster Nos he was pleased with the way things had gone. ‘Youngsters and the older men in the Schilderswijk are taking charge of the situation and I am very proud they are demanding their neighbourhood back,’ he said. Protest The disturbances began on Monday night after a protest about the death of Mitch Henriquez in police custody. Henriquez died after being thrown to the ground and bundled, apparently unconscious, into a police van after an open air concert by UB40. 

The Henriquez family have announced on Facebook that they are organising a silent procession on Saturday evening which will begin at The Hague station of Moerwijk and end at the spot where Mitch Henriquez died.
