As the summer heat turns up the Coast Guard reminds all mariners to boat responsibly while on the water: wear a life jacket; take a boating safety course; get a free vessel safety check; and avoid alcohol or other impairing substance consumption. Here are some quick boating statistics from last year (2014):
-Boating fatalities increased from 560 to 610 (8.9% increase)
-Boating accidents increased from 4,062 to 4,064 (0.05% increase)

On Tuesday morning, The Weather Channel's Wake Up with Al hosted Coast Guard members to talk about boating safety during National Safe Boating Week. 
Al Roker and Stephanie Abrams talked about the importance of safety equipment and proper precautions and procedures while boating with Lt. Cmdr. Bill Walsh, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station New York and Coast Guard Auxiliarist Valerie Ramsberger.
