As the summer heat turns up the Coast Guard reminds all mariners to boat responsibly while on the water: wear a life jacket; take a boating safety course; get a free vessel safety check; and avoid alcohol or other impairing substance consumption. Here are some quick boating statistics from last year (2014):
-Boating fatalities increased from 560 to 610 (8.9% increase)
-Boating accidents increased from 4,062 to 4,064 (0.05% increase)

Yesterday the Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard Silent Drill Team performed at the September 11th 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan, New York, May 21, 2015.

For today's throw back Thursday, we venture back to 1849. The Revenue Captain Douglas Ottinger reported completing the construction and furnishing of eight life-saving stations on the New Jersey coast between Sandy Hook and Little Egg Inlet, marking the beginning of Federal life-saving efforts.

On Tuesday morning, The Weather Channel's Wake Up with Al hosted Coast Guard members to talk about boating safety during National Safe Boating Week. 
Al Roker and Stephanie Abrams talked about the importance of safety equipment and proper precautions and procedures while boating with Lt. Cmdr. Bill Walsh, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station New York and Coast Guard Auxiliarist Valerie Ramsberger. Harry, station New York’s dog mascot and his handler, Petty Officer 2nd Class Daniel McGrath, demonstrated the importance of protecting your pets out on the water with the proper safety gear made just for animals.
