Police officer shot,in critical condition
An on-duty New York City police officer was shot and critically injured Saturday evening and a search was underway for possible suspects, police said.
Dozens of police officers, marked and unmarked cars, emergency service unit trucks and police helicopters flooded the scene in the Queens Village neighborhood, and officers could be seen searching house-by-house, looking in back yards, under cars and walking on top of roofs with their flashlights.
The shooting, the fifth of an on-duty officer in as many months in New York, comes after two NYPD officers were shot and killed in Brooklyn.

Shopper kills carjacker: A shopper with a concealed weapons permit shot and killed a man who was trying to carjack a woman Saturday outside a Utah grocery store, officers said. The 31-year-old male shooter was in Macey’s parking lot in Orem, 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, when he heard a woman’s screams as she was being pulled from her SUV by the suspect, investigators said. The man told police he went to assist the woman, and the 27-year-old male suspect lunged at him in an attempt to grab his gun. The man fired one round at the suspect, hitting him in the chest. The suspect later died at a hospital.
Oakland protests turn violent: Oakland’s mayor and police chief acknowledged Saturday that they fell short in controlling what police said was a night of some of the heaviest damage yet in peaceful marches that have turned violent. Up to 400 people roamed dozens of blocks of Oakland’s downtown Friday night to Saturday morning, breaking the glass fronts of banks and a few other businesses and systematically smashing the windshields of rows of vehicles at one car lot.
