In May 1940 the British Expeditionary Force, French and Belgian forces were trapped on the beaches surrounding Dunkirk. A major operation was initiated to evacuate these troops known as Operation Dynamo.

Meet Diana Gould - 103-years young on 23 May. After being inspired by Diana's positive attitude to life on a routine home fire safety visit, crews from Stanmore Green Watch decided to pay her a surprise visit on her birthday. Crew Manager Stavros Marangos said: "She's a remarkable lady and stole our hearts with her amazing attitude. We wanted to do something a little bit extra for her so we took a fire engine to her home to surprise her with a card and a bunch of flowers on her big day." Pic ©TonyHardiman

On Wednesday 13th May, having just finished their last night shift, 7 firefighters from Tooting Green Watch hopped on their bikes heading for Paris. The six cyclist and one support driver set themselves the unusual challenge of cycling to and from the capital of France and travelled via Brighton, Newhaven and Dieppe,
After taking in the sights of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, the crew headed to Paris Fire station where they rested for the night. The next day they got up and set off on their ride back to Tooting, arriving back at the station on Saturday. The crew cycled a total of 400 miles in their four day challenge – well done you crazy bunch!

The LFB's former fireboat the Massey Shaw has left Dunkirk harbour and is now on her way back to Ramsgate. She was taking part in the 75th anniversary commemorations of the rescue of British troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. 18 firemen took part and are credited with plucking around 500 British troops from the shallow waters and ferrying them to large ships anchored in deeper water.

Huge congratulations to the LFB Fire Cadets team who won the FSYTA National Fire Cadets Advocate Award last week.
The team do a fantastic job running our Fire Cadets units where young people aged 14 to 18 gain life skills they can use in the work place and work towards a BTEC in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community.

Nobody other than William knows how got into a disused swimming pool at Cudham near Sevenoaks, but there is no mystery over how he got out again. Firefighters from Bromley fire station used large animal rescue equipment to lift the trapped horse to safety on Friday afternoon. It was a difficult rescue owing to William's old age and distress. Firefighters had to keep his nose out of the water until a vet arrived and sedated him. Fire crews then worked hard for several hours preparing to lift him out, first draining the pool before putting slings and straps around William so he could be lifted out by his owner using a JCB and carried to a field nearby. William was soon on his feet, with only a few cuts and bruises to show for his ordeal.

We shouldn't have to say this, but to anyone thinking of doing the 'Fire Challenge’ – DON’T. It's not big, it's not clever and you will almost certainly seriously injure yourself.

Planning a spring clean over the long weekend? Don’t forget to clear out the loft. A lightning bolt struck the roof of a house in Pinner earlier this week and the fire was fuelled by the items being stored in the attic.
High levels of clutter not only make it much easier for a fire to start but also create a greater risk of fire spreading. It can also make it difficult to escape and can lead to difficulties for firefighters tackling the blaze.

  • Liam Oliver Newton Craik-Horan When my wife and I moved into our house about nine months back the loft was FULL of cardboard boxes and useless paperwork and other flammable stuff. Took it out into the garden and burnt it there safely. Sadly now the loft is full of our own junk already but at least it's not half as flammable!
