Dear EMS1 Subscriber,
What qualifications are necessary to drive an ambulance?

A N.Y. patient was ejected and her family is asking if a 19-year-old was adequately trained and qualified to drive. A minimum driver age may not be an assurance of safety. In a S.C. ambulance rollover, a 43-year-old responder was ticketed for disregarding a stop sign. A N.J. ambulance rollover sent six people to the hospital. Creating and maintaining a safe scene, even as we drive to the patient or travel from the hospital, is our paramount responsibility.

We also recognize the outstanding work of the 911 dispatcher that calmly assisted a woman that had been stabbed and had her fetus stolen, along with an off-duty paramedic that saved an infant from a burning car.
