The violence in Ukraine was top of the agenda at the United Nations Security Council's open debate on peace and security.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Ukrainian counterpart, Pavlo Klimkin were both in attendance.
On the sidelines of the conference, Klimkin told Al Jazeera that he wants EU or UN monitors to be sent to Ukraine.
