New Orleans is one of America’s most fascinating cities and a melting pot of international influences. Visitors often come for the jazzy nightlife in the French Quarter, the booming culinary scene, and, of course, this month’s Mardi Gras celebrations, but that’s not all this Southern city has to offer. Once you’ve finished throwing beads, sipping Hurricanes, and munching on shrimp and grits, take it down a notch… there’s a softer (but just as interesting) side of the city, too. Here, local Alexis Korman shares her insider tips on where to scope out the best healthy eats for the Vegetarian Tribe (or for anyone who wants a break from all the beef), and the best off-the-beaten-Bourbon-Street places to find affordable food, shopping, and nightlife for the Budget Tribe. Then Jacob Bielanski takes the kids out on the town for some sober Family Tribe fun. Feeling inspired yet? Book your New Orleans hotel.

Old U.S. Mint
One of the best places to learn about the history of NOLA’s music scene is actually… the Old U.S. Mint. The building has long since stopped producing currency (although you can still check out an exhibit about its money-making past) and switched to making music. Stop by to check out a collection of artifacts from the city’s rich musical culture, like Louis Armstrong’s cornet and Sidney Bechet’s soprano sax, and then stick around for one of the regular concerts at the Performing Arts Center.
