FDNY: Fire FF Over "Message" Shirts

Brooklyn firefighter gets fired over anti-affirmative action shirts

EXCLUSIVE: Thomas Buttaro, 44, allegedly wore offensive shirts with slogans like ‘MADD — Minorities Against Dumbing Down’ in his Crown Heights firehouse. Sources say the shirts bore the logo of ‘Merit Matters,’ a group that opposes giving minorities FDNY recruits an advantage over whites.

Crown Heights smoke-eater Thomas Buttaro allegedly wore offensive shirts bearing 'Merit Matters' logos while on the job.ELLEN MOYNIHAN/FOR NEW YORK DAILY NEWSCrown Heights smoke-eater Thomas Buttaro allegedly wore offensive shirts bearing 'Merit Matters' logos while on the job.
A Brooklyn firefighter was given the boot for the “malicious actions” of wearing his thoughts on his sleeve, sources told the Daily News on Thursday.
The smoke-eater, Thomas Buttaro — who had been on the job since 1998 — wore offensive shirts bearing “Merit Matters” logos in his Crown Heights firehouse more than 50 times over a 10-month period in 2012, the sources said.
Some of the shirts Buttaro, 44, wore while on the job at Ladder Co. 123 included slogans like “MADD — Minorities Against Dumbing Down,” which blamed court-ordered outreach to add minorities to the FDNY ranks for weakening the department, the sources said.
“He was creating a hostile work environment in the firehouse,” the source said. “It was so disruptive, it was causing problems.”
Other anti-affirmative action shirts Buttaro wore insinuated that minorities didn’t earn their way into the department.
Merit Matters describes itself as a group preserving merit in FDNY testing and is opposed to giving minorities an advantage over white recruits.
NYC PAPERS OUT. Social media use restricted to low res file max 184 x 128 pixels and 72 dpiSUSAN WATTSFDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro approved Buttaro’s termination.
Buttaro, who is white, confirmed his firing Thursday night and maintained he did nothing wrong.
“Our attire, off-duty to and from work, has never been regulated,” he told the Daily News.
“Rules are that at work, you have to be in proper attire. Our locker room is on the second floor. We have to be in proper attire by roll call. Not before, not when you get to work, not when you leave.”
Buttaro said two members of the department served him with termination papers Wednesday evening at his Long Island home.
An FDNY spokesman confirmed that Commissioner Daniel Nigro approved Buttaro’s termination.
'You're supposed to respect differences of opinion.' The 44-year-old defended his choice of attire.ELLEN MOYNIHAN/FOR NEW YORK DAILY NEWS'You're supposed to respect differences of opinion.' The 44-year-old defended his choice of attire.
The move followed a recommendation from an administrative court judge that the firefighter get canned for “malicious actions that were in the firehouse intended to harm and humiliate a fellow firefighter” and other discriminatory reasons, according to an internal FDNY document.
“You’re supposed to respect differences of opinion,” Buttaro said. “You can’t just say you’re offended ... it deflects a discussion.”
A long-running legal battle over minority recruits and supposedly biased FDNY entrance exams was settled last year when Mayor de Blasio agreed to have the city pay out more than $100 million to 1,500 minority firefighter applicants.
A 2011 federal court ruling found the FDNY — and then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg — intentionally discriminated against minority applicants, but it was tossed prior to the settlement.

He should have known it wasn't a genius move.  He all but called the other, minority firefighters incompetent jerks.  You try openly insulting your coworkers, especially ones you expect to save your @$$ in a fire.  See where it gets you.

He all but called minority firefighters incompetent jerks? Actually he didn't, there was only one incompetent jerk who he had a problem with according to court proceedings and in fact that ONE minority firefighter WAS and still IS and incompetent moron. When you've been doing your job for as long as the complainant has and you still can't figure out how to do,said job correctly you are in fact incompetent. Also many minorities who got on the Fire dept the correct way with hard work and perseverance have worn the same shirt.

When your boss says, "stop," you stop.  It isn't up to him to give the performance appraisals, but his boss.  Anything else is insubordination.  No matter.  He feels that other firefighters aren't up to his standards.  He can coach from the bench.

Actually in the fire dept it's the men that break in new members and show them the way of tradition and how to do their jobs. It is to those men who you are accountable to because like said before it's their lives that can be lost.  The firehouse both men are in is a stellar one, and the fact the " firefighter" who felt slighted had to be reprimanded because he doesn't know his job only speaks to his character and that he is incompetent.

If you are wearing it to work, that's at work. If he was warned to stop doing it, but kept on anyway then he quit that job.

He's lucky they didn't leave him to burn, let alone fire him.  That shirt was intended to insult and did.  Now, he has lots of time to contemplate how unfair life is.

The ONE person he had a problem with and rightfully so would leave guys behind to save himself when a situation would go bad in a fire, which is why he had the problem with him . Black, white, green, red doesn't matter what color you are or gender of you can't do your job you'll get your scrutinized over it as you should. People lives are at stake and if someone back doomed their way in after failing multiple tests and clearly being unqualified you'd have a problem too.

True, but you have to know they "back-doored" their way in, don't you?  You can't just assume it.

Mary, because of the lawsuit the most latest was made available to those who failed a simple reading comprehension test. People who scored a 25 on previous tests were allowed to take this test and guess what? They are now in charge of saving your life because they have been pushed through. A little side note it might add is the fact that an answer sheet for the last entrance exam has never been printed or published for anyone to see, hmm wonder why that is, little weird don't you think? That is a fact and that is back doodling your way in, I'm not assuming it's happening. The safety of the publics lives and lives of our firefighters are being endangered for the sake of diversity.
