Why We Need Reimbursement Reform
The current financial reimbursement model used by our federal government and other payers is based on the 1960s model of ambulance transportation rather than today’s EMS model of delivering patient care. Using an old model for reimbursement inhibits the evolution of EMS into a mobile integrated healthcare system that supports improved patient outcomes and lower costs. Community-based paramedics, participating in CMS-funded innovation grant programs, are making a difference in their communities by treating patients and ensuring they are directed to the most appropriate healthcare facility. These innovations can be extended nationwide with the support of an appropriate reimbursement model. Learn why we should develop a reimbursement strategy that reimburses for patient care and quality service delivery and promotes the mission of “right patient care at the right time and in the right setting." Plus hear about a recent $225,000 federal grant that will foster innovative healthcare delivery models in EMS.

These measures will help the profession demonstrate the value of MIH programs to the patient, payer and healthcare system stakeholders.
