The late conservationist and TV wildlife expert's family took to social media with moving tributes to him.
Wife Terri, 50, and daughter Bindi, 16, both shared messages making it known that Steve was in their thoughts.

Terri posted a photograph of her late husband holding a crocodile, and wrote: 'One crowded hour of glorious life is worth more than an age without a name.'
Her teen daughter, meanwhile, shared a picture of herself as a baby with Steve, simply captioning it, 'Always.'
Steve passed away on September 4, 2006, after being pierced in the chest by a stingray while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Queensland.

His family have continued his conservation work at Australia Zoo, with both Bindi and younger brother Robert dedicating their lives to being 'wildlife warriors' like their father. 
Bindi has been in a contemplative mood on her Instagram feed in the days leading up to her father's birthday. She shared the quote, 'I've never met a strong person with an easy past,' in one pensive post.
In another, she posted a black and white picture of herself gazing skyward, writing: 'Human instinct - we hardly ever look up. So take a moment. Look at the sky. Rain or shine, our world can be glorious and intimidating.'

In late 2014, Bindi spoke to Daily Mail Australia about struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss of her famous father.
'It's like losing a piece of your heart that you don't get back,' she said.
'People that say time heals all wounds, but that doesn't work,' she said revealing her ongoing struggle, 'It doesn't ever happen... you learn to cope.'
Bindi has appeared in a number of television and big screen productions in her teen years. She has hosted a number wildlife-themed TV specials, and starred in two films: Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove, and Return to Nim's Island.

And now brother Robert, 11, is following in her footsteps, announcing last week that he has been cast in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. 
In the latest movie from the hugely successful SpongeBob franchise, Robert's Kyle the Seagull, is the side kick to fiendish pirate Burger Beard, played by Antonio Banderas.
The 3D film, which hits cinemas on April 2, follows the story of SpongeBob and friends in their bid to retrieve the secret Krabby Patty formula.
