As you could have predicted, knowing NYC, Mayor Bill DeBlasio's termin office started off with some unusual challenges.
Some of these have become polarized in an unproductive way.
It isn't a question of whether "Police lives matter" or "Black lives matter"- ALL LIVES MATTER.
Likewise, the Mayor is some finally trying to do something about the City's spiraling housing costs, which are causing so much distress for average New Yorkers, and building more affordable housing.
And he certainly is right on the nose on the need for more mental health services in the City. A lot of the City's other problems are directly tied to problems of Mental Health.
As usual as also in all these matters, "everybody's a critic," from square one.
I was more than vaguely interested to see that the media said that "Cuomo says DeBlasio housing proposals 'Dead on Arrival.' Of course, Governor Cuomo, who seems to be playing politics of an unkind type here, has not come up with any new proposals for the problem of affordable housing himself.
It would be much better if the Mayor and the Governor could work TOGETHER on this issue and let's hope that's what happens.... they both say they represent the best interests of all New Yorkers and are have a similar political slant-- why is it so hard for them to work together, then?
As someone who works as a volunteer in the Mental Health field, directly with the Training Institute for Mental Health, I am really impressed with the Mayor's new initiatives in this direction and his willingness to air the problems of his own family in this regard-- that takes guts.
There is the potential for much more Good News than Bad in all this and I hope the Mayor and the Governor can find a way to work together on Housing and all the other major aspects of life which have become more and more critical for the average person in New York and which have not been handled well on the whole by the prior administration.
Let's hope for the best and all try to work together for a better New York.
