Yelp Reviews- UWS Shake Shack- Burger Lovers Only

The Food Police and people such as Dr. Memet Oz hate this place. The average burger lover adores it.

Well located near the American Museum of Natural History.

Usually: Extremely pleasant servers, longish lines (but not always), happy eaters

Before going to this one I've been to the one in Cambridge, MA.
So I knew their burgers were good and that they open late, that's why I've been there.

OK, it's just a bunch of dollars for a burger. BUT I hated the aggressiveness of the staff who just had in mind to close the store (I arrived 5-10 minutes before the close). So they rushed me so hard. No niceness, no smile, the girl at the cashier looked clearly like disliking her job and talked to me bad.
I was really upset when leaving.

Don't go there when they're about to close! Sorry, you lost a customer.

I needed somewhere to get a quick bite to eat with a friend that attends Columbia and realized I had always been meaning to try Shake Shack but never had. After a quick subway ride and short walk, we entered to an extremely busy lunch spot. There wasn't a line, though, so I quickly ordered a regular burger and fries.

The food came out fairly quickly; however, there was nowhere to sit. We ended up asking for to-go bags and the very friendly lady working gave us two. There are plenty of benches on the other side of the street, so we just sat there and ate which ended up being fine.

The burger was very good--not quite as good as In n Out, but a very good burger nonetheless. Nice patty, delicious sauce, crisp lettuce. The fries were pretty good as well.

Save for the non-availability of seating, Shake Shack turned out to be an excellent experience. I'd return with no problem--especially to try a shake.

The food is so so good and the custard - forget it. We got the candy cane custard and it was insane! But this particular Shack is so tiny and there's no flow to ordering/waiting/getting your food. We felt like cattle stuffed in together, desperately waiting for our number to get called. However, that's part of the charm of Shake Shack, so it won't stop me from going back :)

Situated behind the Museum of Natural History you'll find a long line for the tourist crowds coming from the museum or from Central Park. It's smaller of the chain but has a dedicated seating area downstairs. Go for the smoke shack burger which had great juicy flavor in the meat and accompanied with italian red peppers, bacon, shack sauce and lettuce and tomato. Simply fills the stomach with excitement. Fries were crispy and crinkly which were a highlight. Had the shakemeister dog as well. A nice beefy hot dog with cheez wiz and fried shallots. I've had better hot dogs but it was really about the flavorful toppings.

Back in NYC and had to eat at shake shack. Unfortunately the one in Madison Square Park was closed for renovations so I went to this one uptown. Small place but they are moving quick. Waited in line out the door at 2pm and 2:45 I was out on my way. Good burgers and awesome shakes. If you ask me it's a bit pricey for a burger of its size. I mean In & Out Burger is half the price and taste a lot better.

Definitely a good burger for the east coast, well I haven't been to White Castle yet so I can't really compare.

Four stars because of long lines and no where to sit.

This is now one of my most favorite places to eat a burger in the whole wide world. Their house burger is just busting with flavor. Everyone at our table enjoyed the meal. Wait time is long, but you're across the street from Central Park so what do you expect? We waited about 20 minutes in line to place our order, and then another 10 minutes to get our food. It is worth the wait. There is little seating on the main floor, but check in the basement for additional seating a.

Lunch for two people will run between $15-$25 depending on your appetite.

Enjoy and go back many many times!

The Shake Shack was recommended to me by some locals. I visited the Upper West Side for business frequently and when I was in the mood for Fast Food I would walk here. The burgers are pretty good but the shakes are great. Make sure you add malt to your shakes though it makes it amazing! Its pretty busy though expect a line. There is plenty of places to sit but again it can get quite busy. I would compare this place to a higher end In N Out.

I am a southern California boy born and raised on In-N-Out Burger. I would never say this lighty, but I have to admit that Shake Shack is just as good if not better than In-N-out. A bit lighter and fresher with the same flavorfulness. The bun melts in your mouth! There seems to be more and more options every time I make it to New York but if its your first time, go with the classic Shack Burger you will not be dissapointed.

I recognize that I'm completely in the minority on this - but the food here just isn't good.  The fries are horrible (crinkly or otherwise), the hotdogs taste like they've come out of a microwave oven and the hamburgers are way too greasy.

Ok - the shakes are ok - but that's really the extent of any reason to come here.

There is absolutely no legitimate excuse to stand in a line for 20+ minutes to get a burger and fries at this place.

If you want good burgers and fries, go to 5 Guys Burgers and Fries.  The food is so much better there.

Again, I recognize that I'm in a minority here.  Everyone else seems to love the food here.  I just will never understand it.

Since I work in the Financial District and live in Northern Brooklyn, Shake Shack is never really on the way to anywhere I go on a day-to-day location. And the prospect of long lines and its general ubiquity means that it's hardly a destination location.

So it had been nearly three years since I'd been Danny Meyer's ever-expanding location. The occasion was pretty cliche - a couple friend of mine was coming down to the City from upstate with their three-year-old and eight month old twins. We had a busy afternoon planned of Central Park, the Museum of Natural History and a subway ride. But first, we needed lunch, and headed to the Upper West Side location.

Safe from the rain, the inside resembled one of those puzzle games where any one movement required navigating a maze of strollers, high chairs, groups of tourists and snaking lines. We divided into two groups - one to secure the table while the other went online. It went surprisingly quickly, we placed orders after only five minutes and then had a table that fit our party of many people.

What struck me on this return visit was the continued creativity that's going on here. We came during the now over "Oktoberfest" promotion, which included an entire currywurst, speciality burger and collectible beer steins. The curry ketchup (made for the currywurst but no one had any problem when I requested a side for my fries) was legit. It's solidly in the upper third of curry ketchups available in Manhattan, and in no one would be embarrassing in Frankfurt. A burger with bacon and cheese satisfied while being different from the standard Shake Shack experiences. My 24 oz. take-home stein is a nifty collectible, and at $10 a nice deal.

(The inane change over back to crinkle-cut fries hadn't occurred at this location when I visited, so I can't really dock any points for that. The fresh cuts arrived perfectly crisp, making me question why the chain would return to a frozen product.)

All of this far more than the restaurant needs to do in order to thrive. Every location (including the one at Citi Field and JFK) that I've passed in the last few months have been mobbed, and it's now a legit tourist destination for a substantial fractions of New York's many, many foreign visitors. But with an increasing amount of limited edition treats, menu promotions and collaborations with other people in the food industry, Shake Shack is simultaneously growing and getting more interesting at the same time.

As far as fast food burgers go, this to me, is the best burger by far. This one is located close to Central Park and pretty close to some of the major museums (on the other side of the park) like The Met or The Guggenheim. It's walkable from those places but traversing through Central Park can be confusing so it's probably a better idea to get a cab or uber.

This location is small and busy. Seating is limited but head downstairs for additional seating. There's two line when ordering, the regular order line and the "C line." The C line, I guess stands for convenience line? I guess it's designed to move faster as you're not allowed to order hot food from that line. I think it's more for order another round of beers.

The burger is really good. The meat is not premade patties like most fast food joints. They're hand formed and mine was cooked perfectly. There was still a lot of pink in the meat with I appreciated. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and crisp and the bread was fluffy and delicious. The crinkle cut fries were fresh and crispy. I also had a shakemeister beer, specially brewed for shake shack by Brooklyn Brewery. Went great with my meal.

Keep in mind that although it's fast food, when it's busy, you're gonna have a wait for your food and possibly a place to sit.

Shake Shack made it to the list of must-try's and for a Monday night, there was no line. Decided to stray away from the usual burger and try the 'Shroom Burger ($6.90) with a side of cheese fries!

The 'Shroom Burger was phenomenal and it blew my mind that a portobello burger could be that good. The portobello "patty" was huge and equal in size to the bun, it was battered and fried to a great crisp, and then to top it off-- the shroom is stuffed with melted cheesy goodness that oozes out! Such a great alternative for vegetarians and I didn't miss the meat at all.

Cheese fries were also delicious and the cheese sauce was great! Highly suggest sprinkling a couple black pepper packets on top!

Wish that the buns were toasted... and my friend pointed out later that the burgers lacked onions! Would only suggest getting the Shroom Burger because the beef patties are thin (although seasoned well).

What's in a name?  Like Father's Office in California, I learned not to judge a business just because of a name.  Why in particular?  The reason being that this  "shack" just happens to be the home of some delicious burgers and fries!

We headed to this location on the upper west side after spending a few hours at the American Museum of Natural History (which is located just across the street).  I was quite famished after going thru all four floors of the museum and viewing most of the exhibits.

As we approached Columbus Avenue, we were slightly dismayed to see the long line waiting to enter.  We didn't expect it to be so crowded at nearly 3pm.  But, we decided to make the best of it and solemnly took our places in line.

FOOD:  Collectively my friend and I ordered the shack shack burger, fries, DogMeister, and custard shake with peanut butter.  The shack shack burger, though simply made, was wonderfully delicious.  It must be that shack sauce.  What exactly is in that sauce??!!  Apart from the burger,  I also thought that fries were quite good.  Very reminiscent of In-n-Out burger in California.  My friend enjoyed his hot dog, but sadly didn't care much for the shake.

SERVICE:  Very good.  A jovial young man passed out menus to those waiting in (the very long) line.  This gesture, no doubt, was very considerate and definitely helped me to decide ahead of time.  The line moved at a very decent pace (faster than I expected honestly), and before we knew it we were placing our orders.  To keep things organized, customers are provided a buzzer instead of straining to hear their name called amongst crowd chatter. We decided to wait outside and within 10-15 minutes our food was ready.

SIT:  Seating was scarce.  We decided to do what many did that day and sat at bench near the museum.

BOTTOM LINE:  Good food and good service.
