Today in History- the Beginnings of the Nazi Party in Germany, 1919.

A lot of Germans-- maybe most- did not believe they lost World War One fair and square. They felt they had been betrayed buy "The November criminals," the Socialist led politicians who signed the vindictive Treaty of Versailles, which blamed everything to do with the War on German, demanded huge reparations payments and meant the occupation of coal mining areas in the Ruhr by the French...etc.

Meanwhile, the Real Left in Germany, with the help of the new Soviet Union, was starting Communist revolts in Bavaria, in Hungary, and in Berlin among other places. Something like a civil war ensued, and the Communists lost.

What was not lost on most Germans was that almost all the Communist leaders were Jews. And Jewish bankers, lawyers, and black market operators made out like bandits in the discord and misery that soon ensued.

Average middle class Germans lost their life savings in the inflation that followed.

New voices were heard, all preaching revenge and the rise of a New Germany that would punish all those who had betrayed Germany and were profiting from its defeat..

I feel you know the rest pretty much, enough has been written about it.

And note how much the German Fascists learned from Mussolini, who had already prevailed in Italy.. Though the zealots of German Fascism had much more violent and grander thoughts in mind.
