My parents were from New York State ( my mother was born in Manhattan and grew up in Yorkville and then on Long Island, my father was from Upstate), but ended up in the Middle West during WWII because of my father's being with the Army Signal Corps. They stayed there for 22 years before moving back to the the NYC area..
I grew up basically in Wilmette, Illinois. The most interesting thing about Wilmette ( besides a nice beach on Lake Michigan) is the Baha'i Temple near the lake.
The Baha'i Faith stresses the oneness of humanity and has been persecuted everywhere of course, particularly in the Middle East where it was founded by a Sufi mystic....

I was not raised in the Baha'i Faith but of course I was very aware of it and its teachings and it made a big impression on me...here is an article from today on how it is being persecuted in Yemen
