STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A fire that burned the Eric Garner memorial after a vigil led by the Rev. Al Sharpton on Martin Luther King Jr. Day was an accident, according to the city Fire Department.
Eric Garner's relatives, including daughter Erica Garner and step-father Benjamin Carr, have said that the fire was intentionally set.
"Accidental candle fire" was the only response provided by a spokesman for the FDNY when asked for the cause of the blaze that was reported at 10:24 p.m. Monday at 204 Bay St. The debris/rubbish fire was extinguished within 20 minutes.
A spokesman for the NYPD also said that the incident did not appear to be suspicious. He termed it an unfortunate event that occurred when something caught fire where the memorial happened to be located.
