I worked on Governors Island for almost four years over at the Training Center there ( Bldg 333) and still know it like the back of my , uh, hand, except for what's been torn down and trees lost in storms
Talk about recycling-- FDNY used the enlisted high rise apartment building here for training purposes ( and another one as well-- Governors Island was home to 3,000 people at one time and had its own firehouse....
Ha ha -- I hate to laugh but the FF's at the Governors Island Firehouse spent so little time fighting fires or responding to emergencies that they had to find ways to keep busy or go nuts..
That fire rig got washed and polished to within an inch of their lives ( or were there two rights, and Eng and a Ladder? Have me there. My memory is not perfect).
The FF's were jumpy and if you waved as you went past, they looked away, they actually tried to "look busy" most of the time
Never saw any of them smoking but some of them probably did somehow, back then everyone smoked
Following video is very tech oriented about High Rise special hose-- hell, it may even be out of date but I am a Fire Buff and I can watch a lot of material like this:
