2014 will go down in the record books as the FDNY’s busiest year in its very active century-and-a-half history, according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) of Greater New York and FDNY data.  
After working hard throughout the month of November to raise dollars to assist patients with prostate cancer and testicular cancer and to raise awareness about men’s health issues, Las Vegas, NV Local 1285 members collected $5,350 for the Movemer Foundation. This was the largest amount raised by a group of first responders, making Local 1285 the winner of the foundation’s “First Responder Challenge.” 
Durham, NH Local 2253 Secretary David Blatchford is the newest IAFF member to be honored with Liberty Mutual’s Firemark Award for his part in a successful three-year campaign to install the first automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in two University of New Hampshire sorority houses – Alpha Xi Delta and Alpha Phi.  
Members of the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association (UPFFA) of Connecticut are always looking for new ways to be involved in the community, particularly when they can assist young cancer patients.  
A Philadelphia fire fighter was trapped in the basement of a burning row home early on December 9, becoming the first female member of the Philadelphia Fire Department to die in the line of duty.

In one its last moves before adjourning for the year, Congress passed a massive spending bill popularly referred to as the “cromnibus.” Although the bill funded the majority of the federal government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2015, it left the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a holding pattern, providing the department only stopgap funding through February 27, 2015.

Congratulations to Orange County, FL Local 2057, the winner of the IAFF "Best Pink T-shirt for Breast Cancer Awareness" design contest with 1,089 votes. The shirt was designed by seven-year-old Jay Ryon, who is fighting cancer himself. Jay is also the son of Lake County Local 3990 member Jay Ryon. The shirt was worn by Local 2057 members throughout October. Andre Perez, president of Local 2057, says, "Our members were proud to wear the shirts on duty to help raise awareness, and particularly proud that they were designed by the son of a fire fighter. The contest has been great public relations wise, getting the community involved. It’s been pretty exciting for us."  
A Navy report on the disastrous 2012 fire aboard the nuclear submarine USS Miami provides importance facts and recommendations for improving emergency response at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, where the nuclear submarine was dry docked.

A Republican wave swept the country in yesterday’s midterm elections. With several key races still undecided, and a December 6 run-off in Louisiana’s hotly contested U.S. Senate race, the GOP picked up eight Senate seats, a net gain of 14 seats as of now in the U.S. House of Representatives and three governorships.
